TURNERS FALLS — A three-goal flurry in the third quarter sent the Franklin Tech field hockey team to a 5-0 win over Turners Falls in County league play on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles (5-1, 5-0 County) played offense almost the entire first half but came away with only one goal. Sensing some weakness, the Eagles pounced on their chances in the third quarter.
“We are playing together as a team really well,” Franklin Tech coach Rian Lovett said. “One of the big things we focus on is layering and having each other’s back on the field. I noticed that we did that really well today. It’s helping with our endurance and our ability to play together.”
Abigail Dobias had two goals for the Eagles. Dobias is a catalyst for the Eagles’ offense. The junior initiates all plays out of penalty corner sets. While she had two goals, Dobias is usually the player who creates crosses in front of the opposing net.
“We did really well today playing together,” Dobias said. “Today we really passed and got the touches. It’s nice to know that I can pass it to anyone and they can flick it in.”
Fatigue for the Turners Falls’ (2-5-1, 2-4-1 County) defense may have set in as the third quarter began. Franklin Tech scored the three goals in two minutes, 11 seconds of clock time.
“I really don’t know what happened,” Turners Falls coach Renee Tela said. “I just feel like something was off for those couple seconds. We were doing so well. Maybe getting tired I think.”
Franklin Tech scored in the first quarter off a penalty corner. Dobias initiated the play that eventually found the stick of Teagan Donahue, who sent a shot in front of the net. Dobias scored on the play. Dobias scored again in the third quarter on an assist from Ava Worden. Dobias collected a cross from Worden and buried it to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Donahue set up Amelia Rider in front of the net for Franklin Tech’s third goal. Rider took the pass and swept it in for the 3-0 lead. Leah Meattey set up Emmy Godfrey for another goal later in the quarter.
Meattey scored on a penalty stroke in the fourth. Meattey’s shot ripped the net up high, giving the Eagles a 5-0 lead. Redyn Gutierrez did not have to make a save to record the shutout for the Eagles. Connor Glennon made 39 saves for the Thunder.
