WHATELY — After dominating play through most of the first half, the Frontier Regional boys soccer team had a minute left until the intermission in a scoreless match against Chicopee Comp on Monday afternoon.

The Redhawks got the goal they needed for momentum when Xavier Fripp scored just before the halftime whistle in a 2-0 win over the Colts at sunny and windy Herlihy Field in a Holley League matchup.

Frontier snapped a five-game winless streak. Possession wasn’t a problem for the Redhawks, and the scoring chances multiplied as the game moved forward. Late in the game, the Chicopee Comp defense was under intense pressure from the Frontier attack.

“I thought today we looked better trying to create scoring chances,” Frontier coach Evan Horton said. “In the past, we have not created chances in the first half. Then I feel like our chances become fewer and fewer as the game has gone on through frustration. I felt it was the opposite today.”

Sebastian Forhan fed Fripp on the first goal, sending the Redhawks into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Fripp found himself with the ball after Forhan’s entry into the 18-yard box.

“It bounced right to me in the box, and I knew time was running out in the half,” Fripp said. “I stayed composed and put it away. It set us off and we didn’t have to restart in the second half. We could keep our momentum.”

Frontier is ranked 21st in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings. With good opponents upcoming, the Redhawks could move up the rankings with victories. The first step was a win over the Colts.

“Right now, we are trying to get a handle on things and calm things down,” Horton said. “But we’ve talked about it, a lot. For us, it’s transitioning out of a defensive position into a more attacking position…with the competition coming up, we have to figure out how to get goals.”

Fripp set up Frontier’s second-half goal. The senior midfielder sent a beautiful cross to the far post where Sebastien Migeon gained possession. Migeon settled and fired, giving the Redhawks a 2-0 lead.

Frontier’s stout defense did not give up many chances to the Chicopee Comp offense. Goalkeeper Mason Weis made three saves in the shutout.
