GREENFIELD 一 At long last, the Colrain Street Bridge has reopened.

The bridge reopened on Friday after being closed for more than a year while the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) conducted repairs.

“We know this took a lot longer than expected,” Greenfield Communications Director Jonathon Weber said in a video posted to the city’s social media pages. “We know it was a major inconvenience for a lot of folks, so thank you for bearing with us.”

The bridge was closed in July 2025 for what was expected to be a short, temporary closure for maintenance. Once repair work began, however, MassDOT learned that the bridge was in worse condition than originally believed.

Greenfield posted on the “Construction and Closure Information” page of the city website that the change in the scope of work was “significant and necessary to ensure this bridge asset could continue servicing the community.” The finished project includes a new concrete bridge deck, bridge joint replacements and paving.

The repairs were part of a $15.6 million project to maintain and preserve 15 state-owned bridges over Interstate 91 across Greenfield, Bernardston, Hatfield and Whately. According to MassDOT bridge records, the Colrain Street Bridge was first built in 1964, and during the August 2025 inspection, it was rated as having an overall condition of six out of nine, and the deck was rated five out of nine.

Weber noted that cones and barrels will remain on the bridge and serve as a centerline until MassDOT crews can return to paint lines.

“That will happen in a couple of weeks. They won’t close the bridge for it,” Weber said. “So come on down and drive across the bridge.”
