GREENFIELD — The Greenfield field hockey team’s Athletes Fight Against Hunger food drive was a rousing success on Thursday night. On the field, the Green Wave fell to visiting Agawam, 3-2, at Woodcock Field in a Suburban League matchup.
At the end of the night as darkness fell, the Green Wave table was full of donations from the community.

“I am hoping that the girls see how important it is to give back to the community,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “For a bunch of people who aren’t as fortunate as we are and feel good about it.”
The Brownies (3-3-2, 2-3-1 Suburban) took a quick lead in the first quarter when Sophia DiBella scored with three minutes, 36 seconds left. Fiona Kellogg-Brodeur assisted on the play.
Undaunted, the Green Wave (1-5, 1-5 Suburban) quickly went on the attack. On a penalty corner, Bella LaFleur scored the first goal of her varsity career to tie the game for Greenfield. Payton Martin had the assist on the play.
“The one thing we have every game is grit,” Thayer said. “We are gritty and we are trying to fight hard no matter what…I am proud of them for never giving up no matter what.”
Bridget Loughlin and Lily Charest scored the next two goals for the Brownies. Agawam took a 3-1 lead late into the third quarter. Greenfield’s Madison Lemay scored with 2:09 left in the third quarter to cut the lead down to one goal heading into the final frame. Agawam dominated possession in the fourth, limiting Greenfield’s chances score.
“I keep telling them it’s the little things that make a huge impact,” Thayer said. “We have to create the little things. Moving our feet, having our body position correct. We did a lot of ping pong today. A lot of whacking it into nowhere. We have to get better at gaining possession and getting it where it needs to go.”
Hailey Sadler continued to impress in net for the Green Wave, making 19 saves. Sadler’s aggression and her ability to use her feet to knock away loose balls kept Greenfield close throughout the contest.
Greenfield’s food drive isn’t over. The Green Wave have another night to collect food for the Community Action Food Bank on Oct. 13 against Longmeadow back at Woodcock field.
