Ryan Spofford (Leyden) and Emily D’Souza (Amherst) set course records on their way to victories at the 32nd Annual Don Maynard Memorial 5K road race on Sept. 19 in Greenfield. Mark Rabasco and Daniel Mickus, both of Greenfield, were second and third respectively in the male category. Natalie Wainwright and Linda Spooner rounded out the top three in the female category.
Other local age group finishers are as follows, Max Mather from Colrain won the 19-and-under category while Bea Mickus from Greenfield was the female winner.
In the 40-49 age group the female winner was Irene McGarrity and the male winner was Jonathan Dias, both from Greenfield. In the 50-59 age group, Mary Buckley from Greenfield emerged victorious with Alex Loud from Northfield taking first for the men. Joel Finnell from Bernardston took first in the male 60-64 and Ann Van Dyke took first in the women’s 70-74.
College
Greenfield graduate Henley Gilstrap has 10 goals and an assist for the Keene State College field hockey team through seven games played. The Owls (6-2, 1-0 Little East) beat Smith College, 3-2, in a non-conference shootout win at the Owl Athletic Complex on Sept. 23. Gilstrap had a goal in the victory. Her season includes a hat trick against New England College on Sept. 3.
Soapbox racing
Due to impending rain, the Montague Soapbox Races scheduled to begin on Sunday are tentatively postponed until Nov. 1. It’s the first postponement in eight years of racing in Montague. The races need approval from the Selectboard to move forward with the next scheduled date.
Junior varsity
Athol 1, Narragansett 1 — The Athol boys soccer team tied with Narragansett at O’Brien Field on Sept. 22. Jose Amaya-Salinas scored for the Bears with an assist coming from Samuel Lima.
Youth football
Franklin County Bulldogs (pee-wee) 12, Ware 8 — Remmy Verdery and Xavier McCarthy both found the end zone for the Bulldogs in the win over the Indians on Sept. 20. Holden Hobbs set up the first score with an interception before Verdery ran for a 30-yard touchdown.
McCarthy scored on a 56-yard keeper. McCarthy had seven tackles, with Raphael McCarthy adding to the defensive effort with four tackles. Cody Castine had five tackles while Holden Hobbs and Baylor Malone each added three more. Kash Phillips chipped in with a huge solo tackle for the Bulldogs.
Frontier (pee-wee) 24, Quabbin 13 — The Redhawks dominated both sides of the field in win over Quabbin on Sept. 20.
Frontier (juniors) 25, Quabbin 6 — Frontier moved to 3-0 on the season after a wet and muddy win over Quabbin on Sept. 20. Frontier’s offense found the end zone behind strong performances from Mathew Griffin, Kyrie Petrizzi-Richmond and Johnny Stanisewski.
Brady Barnett and Logan Elias helped lead the way in the offensive trenches as Frontier established its running game in the mud. Ben Griffin and Colson Hebert led the charge on special teams. Lucas Charest, Carson Clark and Niko Lynch led the defensive effort.
Frontier (seniors) 28, Quabbin 6 — Clark Nugent and Troy Kostiuk both found the end zone twice in the Redhawks’ win over Quabbin. Aiden Stone helped power the running game for Frontier. Kostiuk had a forced fumble for the defense which was recovered by Brody Bailey. Aidan Pitchko was a force on defense, recording numerous tackles in the backfield. Pitchko also made an impact on offense with two receptions.
Youth field hockey
Greenfield 3, South Hadley 0 — Penelope Gioules, Dani Zraunig and Savannah Thomas each had a goal and an assist in the win over the Tigers on Sept. 18. Tayanna N’Dissi and Ruby Neil led the defensive effort.
Greenfield 2, Longmeadow 0 — The Green Wave shut out the Lancers on Sept. 19. Penelope Gioules had two goals, with Dani Zraunig adding an assist. Savannah Thomas and Ellie McIntyre shored up the defense.
