The Montague Soapbox Races return for their eighth season on Sunday in Turners Falls. There is no same-day registration. Deadline to register is Wednesday. Carts must be hand-built and anybody from eight-years old to 80-years old can participate.
In previous seasons, over 40 racers participated with speeds reaching up to 37 mph. The Montague Recreation Department organizes the Montague Soapbox Races as a fundraiser for its programming and equipment. The event needs sponsors, volunteers, vendors and racers.

Greenfield Tennis Association
In the Mixed Doubles Tournament final, Caleb Peelle and Cecily Wiswall defeated Alexis Silk and Charlie Hruska 6-3, 7-5 on September 19 at Highland Park. Eight teams participated in the double elimination tournament.
Youth football
Franklin County Bulldogs (juniors) 22, Ware 6 — Orion Ortiz, Zion Carter and Justin Carter scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs in the win over Ware. Weston Hobbs tossed a couple two-point conversions Kent Warner and Gavin Keene led the defensive effort. Zane Richardson and Jace Brunelle recovered fumbles for the Bulldogs.
Greenfield Touch Football
J&J Athletics 12, Blitzing Bears 6 — Mak Rodgers tossed a couple of fourth quarter touchdown passes to lead J&J Athletics to a victory. Trevor Thomas and CJ Holmes had the touchdown receptions. Gabe Fernandez had a 7-yard rushing touchdown for the Bears.
Tar Heels 6, Sirum 0 — Quarterback Jamal Brown found Jordan Ware for a 14-yard touchdown in the Tar Heels’ win over Sirum.
Gill CC Woodworking 58, Firebirds 6 — Pat Viencek threw eight touchdowns for Gill CC Woodworking in a blowout of the Firebirds. Jalen Sanders had three touchdown receptions. Tyson Dowdy and Adam Bastarache had two touchdown receptions each, with Cody Underwood adding another score. Aaron Warren has seven sacks for the defense. Dan Jenks connected with Ken Thomas for a touchdown for the Firebirds.
Racing
The Monadnock Motor Speedway finished its 56th season of racing in Winchester, New Hampshire on Sept. 19.
In the Limited Late Models race, Nate Wenzel scored his first win of the season. Race runner-up JD Stockwell (Bernardston), put together a blockbuster ten-win season to earn his first-career Limited Late Model championship. Maeve Barry (Whately) closed out her season with a fourth-place finish in the Young Guns race.
