GREENFIELD — Franklin County’s YMCA at 451 Main St. is opening its doors to the community this month with special events designed to encourage connection and give local families an opportunity to discover something new at the Y.
National Gymnastic Day festivities
First, Franklin County’s YMCA will celebrate National Gymnastics Day on Saturday, Sept. 19, with a free opportunity for local children to explore gymnastics, ninja and parkour.
Children can experience a gymnastics class, enjoy open gymnastics time, meet YMCA coaches and ask questions while discovering if one of these programs is the right fit. Throughout the day, families can also enjoy arts and crafts, games and food concessions in the Gymnastics Mezzanine, while the Y’s Tumbling Tigers Gymnastics Team will take the floor for demonstrations at 9:30 a.m. and noon.
For children with more experience, the Y will offer an open gymnastics evaluation from 3 to 4 p.m., providing an opportunity for kids to showcase their skills and learn more about joining the Tumbling Tigers.
Advance registration is required for the free gymnastics class, and space is limited. Class times will be based on the child’s age. Visit bit.ly/4xOu8SO to register for classes.
Good Neighbor Day
As part of this year’s Good Neighbor Day, dedicated to strengthening connections, encouraging kindness and fostering a deeper sense of belonging, Franklin County’s YMCA is putting its own Y spin on the day with “Meet Your Y Neighbors.”
On Monday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon, both Y members and non-members alike can stop by the Y for free coffee, snacks and conversation. Guests will have the opportunity to meet new people and mark their home on a Franklin County map.
Nurse to discuss weight-loss medications
During the evening on Monday, Sept. 21, Franklin County’s YMCA will offer two free opportunities to learn and move, with the first being a community talk, “Weight-Loss Medications — The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”
Registered nurse Kelly Henry will lead the presentation from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Social Room, detailing the benefits, concerns and considerations surrounding weight-loss medications.
Roll Model practitioner to lead demonstration
After Henry’s talk, Jamie Simpson, a certified practitioner of the Roll Model Method, will provide a free demonstration from 6 to 7 p.m. Participants will learn therapy ball basics and beyond, using the balls to help reduce pain and restore range of motion. Whether you’re new to the practice or simply curious about another way to care for your body, the free class is an opportunity to give it a try.
“We want the Y to be a place where everyone in our community feels welcome,” Jayne Trosin, the Y’s director of fitness and social responsibility, said in a statement. “Whether you’re coming to meet a neighbor over a cup of coffee or bringing your child to try gymnastics for the first time, these events are about opening our doors and creating opportunities for people to connect with their community and with the Y.”
