The Frontier Youth Junior football team opened its season with a 40-0 win over Warren-West Brookfield on Sept. 6. Bodhi Dark, Jack Mason, Kyrie Petrizzi-Richmond, Johnny Stanisewski and Ryan Washburn all found the end zone in an impressive offensive performance for the Redhawks.
Braden Maloney and Brady Bernat led the charge in the offensive trenches. Silas Shulda helped create pressure up front, while Colson Hebert provided strong play on the edge for the defense. Jazya Penza and Colten Costa shined in their pursuit of the ball late in the game.
The Frontier Youth Senior team earned a win over Ludlow. Troy Kostiuk scored two touchdowns, while Jack Carney added another touchdown for the Redhawks. Carter Flagg disrupted the Ludlow offense the entire game, registering several tackles for losses.
In the Pee-wee match up against Longmeadow on September 5, the Redhawks utilized a balanced offensive attack. Rush Moody, Colton Urkiel, and James Griffin all reached the endzone with touchdown runs.
Franklin County Bulldogs (Pee-Wee) 19, Easthampton 18 — The Bulldogs staged a fourth quarter comeback to beat the Eagles on Sept. 6. Down 18-6, Junior Eady scored on a 10-yard rushing touchdown with four minutes remaining.
The Bulldogs managed to get the ball back with a minute remaining. Eady (115 yards rushing) scored on a 40-yard touchdown before Remmy Verdery’s (75 yards rushing) conversion sealed the win for the Bulldogs.
Xavier McCarthy led the defense with five tackles, with Cody Castine adding four more tackles. Oliver Avery, Holden Hobbs, Raphael McCarthy and Easton Turner added to the defensive effort with two tackles each.
College
Bentley University inducted the 2001 field hockey team to the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2026 on May 29. Bentley won the NCAA Division II national championship that season. It’s the first ever team to get Hall of Fame recognition at the school. It was also the first national title in program history for the Falcons.
Kristyn Bates of Greenfield and Lauren Galenski of South Deerfield both played on the team. Galenski graduated from Frontier in 2000, while Bates graduated from Greenfield in 1999. Bates was a four-year All-American with the Falcons.
Food Drive
The Greenfield field hockey team’s Athletes Fight Against Hunger food drive takes place on Sept. 29 and Oct. 13. The Green Wave host Agawam and Longmeadow at Woodcock Field on those dates. All proceeds go to the Community Action Food Bank. Items needed include canned goods, peanut butter, pasta, rice, breakfast items, soup and hygiene items. In the meantime, food can be dropped off at the Greenfield High School main office, the Four Corners school and field hockey practices from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Field hockey
Greenfield 13, Hatfield 0 — In Junior Rec. field hockey action, Greenfield shut out Hatfield on Sept. 7. Penelope Gioules had a hat trick for Greenfield. Grayson Baker (two goals), Savannah Thomas (two goals, two assists) and Dani Zraunig (one goal, one assist) added to the offensive effort. Juniper Lentz, Aaliyah Dowdy, Eleanor Jones, Ava Diefendorf and Reaghan Bernard also scored. Makenna Ward registered the shutout in net.
Greenfield Tennis Association
In a Division A doubles league semifinal on Sept. 8, Sam Thomson and Jared Berthiaume defeated Sehoon Ahn and Brian Lamore 6-2, 6-0. In the other semifinal, Alexis Silk and Charlie Hruska downed Chris Seaver and Gabe Seaver 6-3, 6-2. The championship match starts at 4:30 on Friday at Highland Park.
