Charles “Chuck” Handren

Northfield, MA – Charles Edwin Handren, 86, of Northfield, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at his home on August 20, 2026. He enjoyed a life full of love, family, friends, hobbies, and his proud service to his country.

Chuck was born on September 1, 1939, in Taunton, Massachusetts. He graduated from Attleboro High School and enlisted in the US Air Force on October 11, 1957. He married Suzanne Gallant on September 5, 1964. As a 1-year Vietnam veteran, he continued his service as a distinguished Air Force recruiter. He retired after 20 years of military service, as Master Sergeant, on March 31, 1978. He then furthered his dedication through a career of placing Veterans in jobs for the state of Massachusetts. He dedicated his life to his family, his community, and his country.

Known by many as “Poppi”, he believed in “Lady Fate”. He loved his family deeply, enjoyed his many hobbies, like gardening, of which he took great pride. He loved spending time with and playing with his grand and great-grandchildren, and he stayed actively involved in their interests at all ages and stages. When someone said, “It’s nice to see you,” he most often responded, “It’s nice to be seen.” Chuck enjoyed many genres of music, his favorite being the late Eva Cassidy. He enjoyed recording his genealogy findings, as his family was the highlight of his life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sue, 2 children: daughter Michelle Laskoski and husband Joe, of Northfield, MA and son Mark Handren and wife Lillian (White), of Prudence Island, RI. He leaves 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

A private Catholic Service of Remembrance will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29 at Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Park Avenue in Northfield, MA. A Military burial is to follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery, St. Mary’s Street, Northfield, MA. All are welcome to the graveside.
