As a science teacher, I understand how important it is that we maximize our use of solar energy and move away from fossil fuels . I also understand too often we have a NIMBY attitude when infrastructure is being put in places it has not been previously. Both these factors come into play in the idea of putting solar panels on Boynton Farm in Conway. They will provide much needed energy, they will be a blight upon the land.
What I do not understand is why we would be putting solar panels on farmland before we have put solar panels in parking lots and medians. There is not a speck of shade in the Home Depot parking lot. The Big Y parking lot is mostly sunshine. Stop & Shop is mostly sunshine. Those of us who park there would appreciate solar panels, creating shade as well as electricity. The I-91 median could support miles of solar panels. Why would we not require solar companies to place their panels in these places first? Once that’s done, if we need more energy, then maybe it’s time to cover the farmlands.
