SOUTH DEERFIELD — A motorcyclist from Greenfield suffered serious injuries Friday night after colliding with a car on Elm Street.
According to Detective Sgt. Adam Sokoloski of the Deerfield Police Department, the initial investigation indicates that the motorcyclist, a 33-year-old man from Greenfield, was leaving Hotel Warren, at 13 Elm St., when he crashed into a 2015 Honda CR-V that was traveling eastbound on Elm Street.
The motorcyclist was issued a written warning for failure to yield the right of way, according to Deerfield Police Chief John Paciorek Jr.
In addition to the Deerfield Police Department, the South Deerfield Fire Department and South County EMS were called to respond at 10:15 p.m. A police officer used a tourniquet on the injured motorcyclist and South County EMS providers evaluated him before he was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Sokoloski continued.
“We encourage members of the public to take first aid education that includes basic lifesaving skills, including application of tourniquets,” Sokoloski wrote in an email.
Although his injuries were not considered life-threatening, the motorcyclist underwent a partial leg amputation, according to Paciorek.
The driver of the Honda CR-V, a woman from Sunderland, declined to be taken to the hospital, Sokoloski added. Both vehicles were towed, according to Paciorek.
