On June 24, the town of Montague is asking its voters to vote on a Proposition 2-1/2 tax override to build a new library. I bought my house in 2009 on a fixed rate after 16 years I would expect my mortgage to be going down instead of up. I pay over $100 more a month than when I bought my house mostly due to taxes.
We do not need a new library. We can fix and make upgrades to the one we have. The year is 2026. People do not use the library like they use to. Drive by the one we have on any given day and you would be lucky to see one car out front. If you want a book club hold it at the members’ houses. Same goes with a cooking club.
What do we need a rooftop terrace for? Kids play in the park on their phones or iPad. I don’t want to pay taxes so surrounding towns can benefit from my taxes and have to put money into the pot. Look at Greenfield. People are not knocking down the doors to get in. After the state grant, we will have to borrow $12.4 million and with interest it would be about $21 million. You get the picture.
Please help me and other fixed-income homeowners keep our American dream. Vote “no”
on June 24.
