Ashfield, MA – Edmund S. Arruda, 80, of Old Stage Road, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026.
Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on August 9, 1945, he was the son of Francisco and Gilda (Costa) Arruda.
Ed proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his service from 1967 to 1971, one of his responsibilities was debriefing pilots returning from missions, a role that required both professionalism and compassion.
Following his honorable discharge, Ed devoted much of his professional life to advocating for others through his work as a social worker and human rights spokesperson. He embodied fairness, dignity, and vigilantly helped all in his workplace.
Those who knew Ed will remember him as a caring, thoughtful man with a good soul. His kindness, wisdom, and honed wit changed many lives.
Ed was predeceased by his beloved wife, Laura (Byrom) Arruda. The love he shared with Laura made his life good, and he missed her deeply following her passing.
He was a devoted husband to his beloved Laurie, a proud, loving father, and he cherished all moments spent with his family.
He is survived by his son, Sebastian Arruda who resides in Raymond, New Hampshire; his sisters, Julie Stone of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Cherie Collin de Casaubon and her husband, Didier, of Maupas, France; and many extended family members who will miss him dearly.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 16, from 10am – 11am at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church Street, Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 34 Monroe Avenue, Shelburne Falls. Burial services will follow at Plain Cemetery in Ashfield.
