Work day planned at library parking lot
GREENFIELD — Residents are invited to join Greening Greenfield and Youth Climate Action Franklin County on Sunday, June 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. to take the first step in making the Greenfield Public Library parking lot a haven for pollinators, butterflies and birds.
When the library was built, a group of residents worked with the landscape designer with the goal of building native habitat. When it came to the parking lot, however, funds only covered the trees. Greening Greenfield is now moving forward with the original dream, thanks to an anonymous donation to the Greenfield Public Library Foundation and the support of the city of Greenfield.
“We envision a rich landscape that celebrates the beauty of the plants that have grown here for millennia, which will support birds; the full life cycle of insects such as bees, moths and butterflies; and build healthy soil, where rainwater can sink in instead of running down the storm drain,” Nancy Hazard of Greening Greenfield said in a statement.
At the work day, attendees will prepare the area under the birch trees for planting. The plan is to sheet mulch the area by laying down cardboard and covering it with about 3 inches of wood chips to smother the grass and improve the soil.
To register for the work day, email nancyhazard30@gmail or call 413-774-5667. The rain date is Sunday, June 21.
