It has been several years now since the colorful statuesque Native American chief along the Mohawk Trail in Shelburne Falls was removed from its perch on the site of the former outdoor movie theater and gift shop and transported to its new home along Route 66. It may strike some as banal and overly sentimental, but I personally still miss seeing my “old friend” when I pass by his former home. After years of peaceful living he somehow became offensive to some who felt he represented a caricature of the Mohawk tribe itself. I think it’s fair to say that this pejorative idea never crossed the minds of the vast majority of viewers.
I wonder if others miss and reflect fondly on our old towering friend.
