Write-in candidates win seats on Board of Health, Board of Trustees of Veterans Memorials
NORTHFIELD — After write-in votes were tallied in the May 5 town election, two write-in candidates secured positions for which there were no ballot candidates running.
Sarah Kerns secured 17 write-in votes to win a three-year seat on the Board of Health. Additionally, Denis Brennan, current chair of the Board of Trustees of Veterans Memorials & Veterans Services, will continue to serve on the board after receiving three write-in votes with no close competitors.
Elder law attorney to speak at Northfield Senior Center
NORTHFIELD — Certified elder law attorney Gina Barry will speak on long-term care and estate planning at the Northfield Senior Center on Wednesday, May 20, from 1 to 2 p.m.
The presentation will explain the rules associated with obtaining government benefits to pay for nursing home care and the most common planning options for preserving assets for your family. Attendees will also take some time to discuss the four basic estate planning documents that everyone should have.
May 21: Farley String Band to perform
NORTHFIELD — The Farley String Band will perform at the Northfield Senior Center on Thursday, May 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. The concert will be held under the pavilion outside, weather permitting.
May 27: Learn about Neighbors at Home
NORTHFIELD — Neighbors at Home, providing a variety of services and social activities that enable Northfield residents to remain in their homes as they age, will hold a public information meeting on Wednesday, May 27, at 6 p.m., at Dickinson Memorial Library’s Community Room (lower level).
Northfield residents are invited to come learn about Neighbors at Home’s services, such as transportation to medical appointments, and how to become a member. Board members will be there to answer questions. Refreshments will be served.

Former police officer to lead self-defense discussion
BERNARDSTON — The Bernardston Senior Center will host a self-defense discussion with instructor Sharon McGuinness on Wednesday, May 27, from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Topics include how to be more vigilant when in public and at home, how to reduce chances of being a victim, using your voice as a defensive technique, pepper spray (uses, warnings and effects) and basic techniques you can use to deter an attack.
McGuinness is a native of Greenfield. She has extensive martial arts training and is a former police officer with crisis intervention training.
There is a suggested donation of $5.
St. Patrick’s Church holding barbecue chicken dinner
NORTHFIELD — St. Patrick’s Church at 80 Main St. will host its to-go barbecue chicken dinner on Saturday, May 30, with pickup available from 3 to 5 p.m.
In addition to barbecue chicken, the church will serve potato salad, three-bean salad, rolls and dessert. Everything is made at the church by volunteers.
Each meal costs $15 and credit cards are accepted.

Dan Becker presenting solo piano performance
WARWICK — Dan Becker will present a solo performance of original neo-classical piano at Warwick Town Hall, located at 12 Athol Road, on Saturday, May 30, at 2 p.m. The performance will feature music from the EP “Echoes of Silence.”
The event is free to attend, though donations will be accepted.

Bernardston Senior Center hosting annual open house
BERNARDSTON — The Bernardston Senior Center will host a two-day open house on Friday, May 29, and Saturday, May 30.
Events include a cribbage tournament on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., a birds of prey demonstration with Tom Ricardi on Saturday at 10 a.m., a visit by state Sen. Jo Comerford on Saturday after the birds of prey event, and a performance by Ron Smith and the G Notes on Saturday at 1 p.m.
