Gail G. Shute

Greenfield, MA – Gail G. Shute, 87, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Ella and Harold Goodrich, Sr.

Born on June 9, 1938, in Claremont, NH where she attended St. Mary’s School through high school. She married Roland F. Shute on October 18, 1958. In 1964 they moved their family to Greenfield, MA where they continued to raise their four children.

Gail was a caregiver, and her career started as an aid at the Franklin Nursing Home on the 11-7 night shift. After several years she moved to the Franklin County Hospital, aka Baystate Franklin Hospital. She started on the orthopedic and rehabilitation floor until moving to the maternity ward. The maternity ward was her passion. Everyone knew the love our mother had of “the babies”. She attended the birth of some of her grandchildren and was a familiar face that greeted those coming off the elevator on the maternity ward when she became the ward clerk before retiring in 2003. Even after retirement Gail was a caregiver taking care of her mother, sister, and brother over the years.

Gail was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Roland “Rolly” Shute, daughter Melissa “Tish” Pease, sister Colleen Kimball and brother Harold “Biff” Goodrich, Jr. She leaves behind daughters, Melinda Sullivan (Mark) Of Turners Falls, MA, and Heidi Gamelin (Steve) of Canterbury, CT and her son Todd Shute (Erin) of Brookline, VT. She is survived by her loving grandchildren, Danielle Sullivan-Beck (Lancelot “Scotty”), Paul Gamelin ( Kellie), Sarah Hines (Glen), Amanda Shute and Jacob Shute (Winter), Alora Zargo and Conner Zargo as well as eight great-grandchildren and her brother, Bruce Goodrich (Sue) of Newport, NH,

Our family wishes to thank the entire staff at The Arbors Assisted Living facility in Greenfield, MA where our mom resided for the past 2 years. She received wonderful care and oversight throughout her time there. Her favorite pastimes were the ladder ball game, music and bingo. She was known to be quite competitive at games.

Services will be at Stringers Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont, NH, Monday, May 18th. Calling hours will be from 10:00 – 11:00 am with a prayer service at 11 am. Burial will follow at the West Claremont Burying Grounds.
