Last week it was my pleasure to attend the celebration of the Poet’s Seat poetry contest at the Greenfield Public Library. Among many other thoughts, three stood out.

First was the wonderful poetry by adults and young people; in an evening of imagery, ideas, and beauty, I thought of our good fortune in having intelligent and sensitive people in abundance in the Valley, and that our schools and teachers encourage and support deep, creative thinking. Thank you.

My second thought went to the poetry committee and the Friends of the library, who have seen the importance of this program for 35 years, and who have worked diligently to give creative youth and adults a place to showcase their skill and feelings. The Friends help make the library the important and special place that it is. Thank you for all you do.

Finally, I went away with a renewed appreciation for the library. While the celebration was going on, the library was open and working and I was reminded of how important it is to our community as a daily place of welcome for everyone. It’s a constant in our lives.

Thank you all for a most pleasant evening and I look forward to next year.
