Northfield has a population of about 2,292. It has a Mayberry feel to it. One has a pretty hard time to go anywhere in town, without running into someone that you know. A quick run to Mims for a newspaper turns into coffee, conversations and toasty bagels.
I guess that’s why Paul and I decided to move our home and our businesses here. Everyone is busy living all kinds of different lives, but when someone has a need, folks just show up ready to help. I think that sets us apart from other communities. It is easy to grow roots in a place where people not only feel part of the landscape, but also feel part of the neighborhood.
I would really like our community to keep its “Mayberryism.” There are a lot of challenges coming down the road for the town. We really need someone who has hands on experience, transparency and a good work ethic. This is why I have decided to vote for Shane Duclos for Select Board. One thing about Shane that would make him a great Select Board member is that he is never too tired to stop his life to help someone. He is a good neighbor and a great addition to our community. We are lucky to have him. He serves as a volunteer firefighter and is also on the Dive and Rescue Team. His experience will provide a realistic vision as we improve and build our infrastructure to help sustain the future of the town. He puts this town first everytime he goes to a fire call. I have no doubt that he will be just as dedicated as a member of the Select Board.
Our Town needs and deserves someone who will not just work hard , but work smart. We need someone who has fiscal, personnel and operations experience as a routine part of their occupation. He currently serves as assistant director of building maintenance at UMass Amherst. He oversees 13.8 million square feet of of space and an annual budget of
more than $10 million. He has working knowledge of zoning bylaws, open meeting laws and governing boards. His children attended and graduated from Pioneer Valley. This gives me confidence that he will have the students, teachers and parents in mind while considering situations pertaining to our education system and budgets.
I also would vote for him because of his sense of humanity. He is never too tired to help his neighbors or his community. He is reliable and steady. He does a good job and he does the right thing when nobody is looking, without banners, parties or recognition.
When I imagine what this town needs to move forward and also hold on to its sense of “Mayberryism,” I guess all of the things listed here are very important. I suppose it seems odd that the one thing he is not is a politician. I am glad about that. Our town needs someone who will show up, represent the needs of community and get the job done without drama or self interest.
