GREENFIELD — Detours are set up around Wisdom Way, Laurel Street and Interstate 91 as crews work to contain brush fires located along the railroad tracks near All-Purpose Storage on Wisdom Way and along the interstate.
Numerous fire departments, including Greenfield, Colrain, Erving, Deerfield, Northfield, Orange and Turners Falls to name a few, responded to flames seen in multiple locations along the railroad tracks and highway beginning at around 3 p.m. Brush trucks, tankers and a special operations trailer joined the response.
Additionally, Greenfield Police Chief Todd Dodge said the Police Department’s drone was being used, and officers were redirecting traffic.
Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesperson John Goggin announced that a lane was temporarily closed on Interstate 91 southbound, and the “closure is expected to remain in place during the evening commute.” He noted “drivers should expect delays.”
According to Goggin, more information and updates on the closure and traffic conditions can be found on the Mass511 app or at Mass511.com.
Firefighters quickly rushed to All-Purpose Storage on Wisdom Way to protect the structure as flames approached the building and smoke billowed around the area. Crews tapped into a fire hydrant on Wisdom Way, and filled up tankers at another hydrant near the intersection of Main Street and Newton Street.
