SOUTH DEERFIELD — A trio of pitchers tossed a shutout for the Frontier Regional baseball team in a 3-0 win over Pioneer Valley Regional in Suburban East play on Monday afternoon.
Carter Miller pitched the first three innings, picking up the win for the Redhawks (4-2, 1-1) at Valiton Field. Miller didn’t give up a hit and struck out four. Jack Cusson and Braiden Dion split the last four innings to close out the Panthers.

“It feels great to have the confidence in them,” Miller said. “I know that if I throw a good game, they are going to follow me and do the same.”
With limited pitchers on the roster, Frontier keeps the innings short in an effort to keep everybody fresh and available.
“Our gameplan when we have a full week is keep everyone available,” Frontier coach Chris Williams said. “That’s how we’ve done it, just mix and match. It’s always a complete team effort.”
The Panthers had one serious threat in the top of the sixth inning. With Dion on the mound, Mike Cyhowski drew a walk to start the inning. Later in the inning, Frontier intentionally walked Evan Tsipenyuk and Brody Welcome to load the bases for Osiah Ballard. Dion got the strikeout to end the frame.
“We felt that was our best chance to get out of the inning,” Williams said.
Frontier’s offense produced seven hits. Dion and Cusson had RBI on sacrifice flies for the Redhawks. In the bottom of the second inning, Frontier left the bases loaded. In the fourth, Miller led off with a single before stealing two bases to get to third base. After getting runners to second and third with no outs, the Redhawks managed only one run.

“It doesn’t seem to matter who we are facing on the mound,” Williams said. “We are just not barreling our baseballs. We are getting under them. We are having weak outs. We are watching pitches and chasing pitches. We are not at the level that we expected to be. Guys have to be thinking more about what pitch is coming.”
Welcome had the lone hit for the Panthers (0-4, 0-3). Ballard made his first varsity start on the mound for the Panthers. The sophomore pitched six innings, giving up seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
“He shows in his bullpens that he has the composure and he proved it today,” Pioneer coach Kevin Luippold. “He has a really good feel out there and I was happy to see him succeed. He kept us in the ballgame.”

Cusson opened the game with a single and ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Another run scored on an error.
“When you see the lead off guy get on it’s like let’s go, let’s go,” Cusson said. “You get adrenaline going and you are able to get out there and play your best baseball. You want to be aggressive, you want to win and you want to score.”
Cusson went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Redhawks.
