The March 13 front-page story, “City woman killed in triple homicide,” revealed devastating losses and a staggering disregard for human life. My heart goes out to the loved ones of Natalie Graves, Linda Dewey, and Margaret Oldroyd.
I was horrified to learn that the Iowa man who callously murdered three women in Utah admitted to police that he did so to access a vehicle and money. Why did he choose to shoot women? Would he have shot men? I believe we should notice that he did shoot women and not men, and I think it would be interesting for psychology professionals to examine the motives and biases of this alleged murderer.
If he’d killed three people of color, I suspect the news media would appropriately raise questions about human rights violations and hate crimes. Reporters would quote racism experts, as well as public officials pledging to address issues of oppression. I hope we can all think about this, try to learn something from this tragedy and hopefully do what we can to prevent similar occurrences.
