Many have commented on the similarities between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. I see one more. When Putin invaded Ukraine, in part out of fear that Ukraine might join NATO, he validated the need for Ukraine to be in NATO. Had Ukraine been a member of NATO, it is unlikely Putin’s invasion would have occurred. Similarly, Trump attacked Iran out of fear that Iran might develop nuclear weapons, but in so doing, Trump validated Iran’s need for a nuclear weapon. Had Iran had a nuclear weapon, it is unlikely Trump would have attacked it. I doubt that either leader can appreciate the irony of their actions.
