Yes, our population is aging. We seniors are the fruit of many generations and our own decades. Along the way, we have contributed our time, skills and financial support for our local schools, libraries, municipal buildings, infrastructure, etc., and we have done our part willingly to support and grow our communities. The energy of this generation does not fade at 55 or beyond. We are active, involved (and perhaps sometimes annoying), but we have good intentions and much to offer.

Right now, we have the extraordinary opportunity for an excellent South County Senior Center to service South Deerfield, Sunderland, and Whately in all the right ways. The building at 112 Amherst Road in Sunderland, owned by Delta Stone and Gravel, is a gift waiting to be unwrapped.

The well-maintained, large brick structure is conveniently located and has plenty of space for all of our current activities, which are now scattered across the valley. There’s also plenty of room for expansion in the future. There is ample room for staff offices, private consultations and nursing/medical care, which is sorely lacking in the center’s current location. The beautifully landscaped exterior affords great space for parking and outdoor activities. Additionally, it is on current bus routes.

We need this great comfortable space under one roof for social interaction, health promoting activities (including fitness and nutrition), life-long learning opportunities, community events, etc. Of all the options being considered, this one is the most advantageous and makes the most sense. It is very affordable, only bumping up your annual taxes about the same amount as a good dinner out!

Most likely we will never see an opportunity this awesome again. Don’t forget, this decision does not just benefit today’s seniors, but would be enjoyed by future generations, as well.

Let’s open this gift by voting “yes” at our next town meetings.  It’s a “win, win!” Right now, we are able to create a thriving community hub for our local seniors, and we are sooo ready to enjoy it!

If you are curious, there will be tours offered at 112 Amherst Road, Sunderland at the following times: Tuesday. March 10 at 1 p.m.; Thursday, March 19 at 1 p.m.; and Monday, March 23 at 5:30 p.m.

Jeannette Allard lives in Whately.
