As a former English teacher at Northampton High School (2004-2020), I was thrilled to read your Jan. 28 article about my former student, Corinne Coryat, who is running to represent the 1st Franklin District on Beacon Hill. Her choices to study political science at Clark; work with Ed Markey, Jo Comerford, and Natalie Blais; and to be involved with the Franklin Regional Council of Local Governments before jumping into the race are consistent with the type of student Corinne was in high school — curious, hard-working, and prepared. She was eager to dive deeply into topics we covered and read and researched widely in order to be well-informed in discussions and debates.
The genuine praise Corinne offered for Rep. Blais as well as her commitment to regional equity and collaboration are consistent with the person Corinne was in high school —honest, considerate, and fair-minded. She offered words of encouragement or praise to her peers when they needed it, did not hesitate to speak her truth (which she could logically defend) even if it ran counter to general consensus, and excelled at working with a wide range of fellow students to produce excellent work.
Corinne Coryat’s run for office gives me hope in this bleak time. Many people want to run away from politics these days, but here we have a principled, dedicated, prepared young woman who wants to serve the public. I am so proud of Corinne for remaining true to herself and choosing a path that can lead to meaningful, positive change for the people of the valley. I wish I lived in Franklin County so I could joyfully vote for her!
