The Turners Falls swimming team’s regular season came to a close at the Wes Snapp Aquatic Center on Wednesday afternoon.
The Thunder swam against Constitution opponent Easthampton to finish the season. Due to a scoring dispute, the final score for the girls meet was not available. The girls (8-1) team had a chance to clinch a share of the Constitution League championship with a win over the Eagles.
Next up for the Thunder is the Fast Chance meet on Saturday at Minnechaug High School. It’s the final opportunity for swimmers to qualify for the postseason.
“I think I am sending 12 to 15 kids to Fast Chance with relays and individuals,” Turners Falls coach Abby Heathwaite said. “They will be spread out. It’s been great. The boys were undefeated, obviously.”
Liam Bliss qualified for the postseason in the 50 free for the Thunder. He swam a blistering 23.28 in the meet.
“I am hoping to take Western Mass.,” Bliss said. “I think I can do it this year. Especially with what just happened in the pool today. The amount of days that are coming up, I can train.”
Alice Fortin just missed qualifying in the 50 free, but hopes to make her time at Fast Chance on Saturday. She is also trying to qualify in the 100 free.
“I am hoping to make it,” Fortin said. “I will obviously try my best. At Fast Chance there’s more time in between. I can push in both.”
The boys team finished undefeated (10-0). The girls team went 8-1 with the Easthampton finish still in play.
“Our team is pretty young,” Fortin said. “They definitely know how to push it and put up a good fight against a bunch of older kids…we are all very supportive of each other. We all know who is trying to get what time and we push goals. We help them get there.”
Turners Falls opened with a win in the 200 medley relay. Avery Houle, Tristan Bliss, Lillian Walker-Hanning and Fortin placed first (2:11.97) for the Thunder. Fortin picked up the win in the 50 free (28.38). The next victory for the Thunder was in the 200 free relay where Adeline Cardona, Avery Houle, Jade Walker-Hanning and Rose Fortin placed first (2:08.72).
