South Deerfield, MA – The morning of January 14, 2026 Malcolm (Mickey) George Thompson traveled home to reunite heart and hand with his beloved wife Bonita “Joyce” and to once again hug his children that went before, Dawn Hanks and Kennard Thompson.
Born in Maine February 27, 1937 to Ralph Thompson and Lorraine Wright; one of 14 children. He was schooled in Maine, skipped the 7th grade and graduated early from the 8th grade. He was on his own at age 14. By necessity he worked many jobs over the years and as a result became a true jack of all trades. In 1956 he went into the army and was sent to Korea in the First Cavalry Unit. While there he drove his Company Commander into the DMZ zone for the peace talks. Returning stateside in 1958 he met and married Melba Brazier. In 1962 he came to Massachusetts to work at the Allard Farm in Hadley with his young wife, 3 children and only 14 dollars in his pocket. Later he worked at Montgomery Rose Company, then Mutual Plumbing and Taylor Rental. He built a home on Bull Hill Road in Sunderland and had another child. Melba died unexpectedly in 1966. A widower with 4 children Mickey met Joyce, a young widow with 3 girls, in 1967 and they soon married. Shortly after their marriage Mickey & Joyce started their own contracting business, M & J Remodeling/Builders. In addition to being a general contractor Mickey was known for repairing and restoring vintage Ford and Farmall tractors. He also served as Building Inspector for Sunderland in the 1980’s.
Mickey was predeceased by his brothers: Ralph, Roland, Warren, Melvin (Buzzy), and Wendell (Wink) and sisters Patsy Lefevre, Winifred (Laney) Scott, and Linda (Sis) Thompson.
He is survived by his siblings: Clifford (Kippy) and Merle, Rita Darling, Connie Campbell, and Betty Machaud. Mickey also leaves behind his children: Bonita Weeks, Fern Kolakoski and her husband Gary, Wayne, Brenda and David Thompson and his partner Nancy Hebert; His grandchildren: Theodore (T) and Faun Hanks and their father Rick Hanks, Jason(Jay) and Sarah Kolakoski, Jonathan, Crystal, David, Jerret, Teddy and Brianna Thompson, Nikesha Simmons, Andrea and Katy Beaumier, and Justin Saalfrank as well as his great grandchildren Brooklynn, Finnlee, Kingston, Freya, Sutton, Lily, Leah, Devontae, Ramona, Dino, Chloe, Landon, Brandie, Ava, Anna, Jakob and Adalee and many other “unofficially adopted” family.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday January 28 from 6pm-8pm at the Wrisley Funeral Home. An In-House Service will be held on Thursday January 29 at 10am at the Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield MA. Mickey will be buried in the East Leveret Cemetery.
