I saw a sign at a recent protest that read, “If you’ve ever wondered what you would’ve done in 1930s Germany — look around. You’re doing it now.”
I am one of those people who has been standing out with my protest signs on street corners and on commons for close to a year now. More Americans are taking to the streets all across this country as this administration sinks to lower lows each day. Courage is contagious, so each and every one of us out on the streets — or on highway overpasses – encourages others to do the same.
But not everyone feels able to stand out in protest. That’s OK. What’s not OK is doing nothing. What’s not OK is pretending it isn’t happening or convincing yourself that there is nothing you can do about it, so why even try? Being silent and doing nothing is what allows horrors to be committed in our names and with our tax dollars. Being silent and doing nothing gives this regime the green light to keep going.
Robert Hubbell reminds us that “This all stops when enough of us say NO!” So how are you saying NO? It doesn’t have to be standing on a roadside with a sign. Do what feels right for you. But do something! Contact your legislators. Even the ones who agree with us need to know that we back them up. Encourage friends and family in other states to contact their legislators. Write postcards or make phone calls to voters in swing states. Donate your time (and your money) to the groups and causes that are fighting back and those that are helping people being harmed by this regime. And speaking of money, know where you are spending your money and ask yourself if your money is being used to support things you oppose. If you’re still enriching the corporations and billionaires that are funding and benefiting from this administration’s tactics, then ask yourself is there another choice I can make?
If you still don’t know what to do, check out Franklin County Continuing the Political Revolution (https://fccpr.us), Indivisible.org, NoKings.org or ask your neighbors what they’re doing. Remember, this stops when enough of us say NO! So, how are you saying NO?
