The Massachusetts Shotgun Deer Hunting season began on Monday and continued on Tuesday with snowy conditions throughout Franklin County.
Area checking stations were steady on both days. Some locals picked up some of the bigger hunts of the first two days. John Betsold of Whately checked in a 172 pound, 11-point buck at Sunderland Hatchery. Todd Seager of Buckland bagged a 176 pound, nine-point buck checked in a Gould’s Sugarhouse. Brian Guerin checked in a 172-pound, nine-point buck at Blitzer Hatchery.
Hunters checking in at Gould’s Sugarhouse in Shelburne braved the elements hunt 33 deer on Tuesday. The biggest hunt of the first two days was Bailey Montiero from South Dennis with a 193 pound, nine-point buck checked in at Sunderland Hatchery.

Franklin County Hockey Associationโs youth programs continue this weekend. The Learn to Play program is underway and continuing each weekend, the Learn to Skate program begins this Saturday at Collins-Moylan Arena.

Sawmill River 10k
The Montague Parks and Recreation Department is taking registrations for the Annual Sawmill River 10K. The Sawmill Run is scheduled for Jan. 1 in Montague Center. The road race will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m., near the Village Common on Main Street. Race Day registration will begin at 9 a.m., at the Montague Common Hall.
