Unfortunately, I found myself in the ER four times in six weeks recently. Everything was unrelated and one visit required an overnight. My room was directly across from one of the nursing stations. Since I find it impossible to try to sleep I had plenty of time to observe the comings and goings.
Trust me, these nurses didn’t sit talking at the desk or gather around the scuttlebutt. When I rang the bell for an attendant they responded quickly, not waiting 20 minutes for help. I can honestly say there wasn’t one nurse who didn’t show true caring, compassion and empathy. They know you are sick and “not yourself.” I saw nothing but true caring for their patients.
In spite of the war no one can break the line. I’m a retired high school social studies teacher and earned poverty pay but that wasn’t my reason for becoming a teacher. I say this because I have always believed that nursing and teaching are the last two noble professions. Nurses clearly don’t get the remittance they deserve.
Last year, when the nurses were on strike and hoped you would use your horns supporting their cause, I always tooted my horn. After my hospital stay if a strike occurs, I would grab a sign and walk with them supporting the cause. I don’t know the president of the hospital but may I say it is the nurses that brings you positive comments.
I had a short stay approximately 10 years ago and was sent a survey which I completed. I don’t write letters. After 10 years compared to today the nurses are still magnanimous but the only complaint I have is the food. I believe the cook was a dropout from the Culinary Institute of America. Mr. President, fix your problems, the nurses are doing their job. So say to future patients and you Mr. President, be nice to your nurses, they are nice to you.
