Childhood studies major, author to speak at library

NEW SALEM — Childhood studies major Emma Mielke will be in the New Salem Public Library’s Community Room from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 29, for a children’s program on personal space for kids.

She will be reading “Don’t Hug Doug (He Doesn’t Like It)” by Carrie Finison. There will be a related craft program.

River Valley Quartet to perform

NEW SALEM — The River Valley Quartet is scheduled to perform from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the New Salem Public Library.

Russ Scott, Kathryn Scott and Joe McCaffrey play clarinet and Sue Dunbar is on the bass clarinet for a mix of seasonal, classical and marches.

‘Old Time Radio Christmas Special’ coming to New Salem

NEW SALEM — The New Salem Public Library will be the site of an “Old Time Radio Christmas Special” hosted by Brian Casey from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

It will be an evening of holiday radio from the 1940s. People will listen to “The Jack Benny Program” episode in which Jack hires an English butler (played by Mel Blanc) to impress his Christmas dinner guests, played by Ronald and Benita Colman. Then, people will hear “The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show” episode in which everyone begins to believe that Santa Claus is real.

This will be the only “Old Time Radio” program this winter.

Orange Community Band to perform Christmas music

ORANGE — The Orange Community Band will perform some familiar Christmas music in Town Hall on Friday, Nov. 28.

Santa will arrive at Town Hall at 5:30 p.m., but the band will set up at 5 p.m. and play for about an hour while Santa greets children. This will replace the outside program in the park where Santa lights the holiday lights.

The big Christmas concert for the Orange Community Band is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside St. Mary’s Church on Congress Street on Friday, Dec. 12. Conductor Stephanie Parker will lead the band in playing old and new Christmas music, including such favorites as “Sleigh Ride” and “Christmas Festival.”

The band will rehearse at the Central Congregational Church on South Main Street on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
