South Deerfield, MA – Franklin Sariel Schwerin, 86, of South Deerfield, MA, died after an extended illness on October 31, 2025.
He was born in Gary, IN in 1939 to Harry and Evelyn Schwerin (nee Wilson). Frank attended Horace Mann School before majoring in Economics at Indiana University, graduating from Harvard Law School, and working as an attorney in Chicago, IL for over 50 years. He then retired to South Deerfield, MA, eleven years ago, to be near family.
Frank was a true renaissance man with many passions: a singer in the band Stuck in the 50’s, devoted Chicago White Sox fan, dedicated member of the Greenfield YMCA, parody song writer, hummer, whistler, snacker, and master napper. He had a great sense of dry humor and loved laughing/making others laugh.
Frank was involved in Independent Voters of Illinois and was passionate about local/progressive politics, as well as volunteered for various non-profits in IL and MA. He also mentored many younger attorneys in Chicago, and was President of the Rotary Club of Franklin County, 2016-2017, after which he helped to form the Frontier High School Rotary program.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife Margaret Michalski; sister Leanore Silverburg (nee Schwerin); daughter Ellen Schwerin (Aman Daro), son Andy Schwerin (Bonnie Schwerin), and son Edward Schwerin (Jessica Farwell); and seven grandchildren: Zachary, Henry, Evelyn, Harper, Gwendolyn, Meghan, and Charles.
A private funeral/interment service was held November 3rd at Temple Israel Cemetery in Greenfield, MA. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.
