As a member of the Sunrise Neighborhood Coalition, (SNC), and a long-time resident of Greenfield, I am responding to the Oct. 27 My Turn by Josie Wakerobin [“NIMBYism and the Sunrise Neighborhood Coalition“].

Wakerobin mentions we support the development of affordable housing. Yes, we do. However, this proposed development by Valley Community Land Trust on Stone Farm Lane is now assessed at over $900/square foot. This is no longer “affordable.” This is above market rate!

This land is still “definitely” a rural, pristine location. It was mined for sand and gravel, which ended over 65 years ago! My immigrant grandfather, Gaetano Ferrante, and father, Domenic Ferrante, moved on to retire from contracting in 1963. This land is intact, full of flora and fauna that lends the perfect connection to our beloved Connecticut River.

The column states that Noble Homes, the builders, will house people more efficiently. By cramming them into the hillside? Disturbing the wildlife corridor? Disrupting the peace and serenity?

The SNC is not “suddenly” concerned about the health of our forest. The writer’s non-local group hasn’t lived and grown here all these years to understand our commitment and love for this beautiful parcel. We have hiked with our children and dogs, raced with our bikes, and kept trails clear for all to enjoy … for generations.

The SNC is not baselessly attacking our neighbors promoting this development. We are supporting our land, our people, our future. The word is “support.” The only “attack” is our compassion to stand up for this sacred land.

Be Ferrante
