Next ‘Count the Cost’ walk set for Oct. 17
SHELBURNE FALLS — The West County Climate Circle will hold its second “Count the Cost” walk on Friday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m. to showcase the financial impacts of the Trump administration’s policies and decisions on the village.
The walk will begin at the Post Office at 7 Church St., then participants will be led to Buckland-Shelburne Elementary School, the Franklin Regional Transit Authority bus stop near the intersection of Mechanic and Bridge streets, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post on Water Street before concluding at the intersection of Water and Main streets, the site of the Shelburne Falls Farmers Market.
At each stop, participants will hear about the impact of federal funding cuts and court decisions on these local organizations. For more information, email westcoclimatecircle@gmail.com.
Ribbon-cutting ceremony for Shelburne Falls Theater set for Sunday
SHELBURNE FALLS — The town of Shelburne and the Memorial Hall Association are celebrating the completion of Phase 2 of a $1.2 million capital renovation campaign for the Shelburne Falls Theater at Memorial Hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community party on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m.
Phase 2 included repair of the historic tin ceiling, refinishing the wood floors, repainting the walls and installing 301 new historic “Emerson” seats. Along with the Phase 1 rebuild of the elevator in 2023, more than $500,000 has been raised to date through federal, state, municipal and private funding sources.
During Sunday’s celebration, attendees can learn about the work that has been done so far; the work planned for Phase 3, which is set to include upgrades to enhance the experience for performers; and enjoy live music and comedy hosted by Heath native, comedian and author Sarah Hartshorne. Visitors can also donate to support future renovations.
Live at the Met: ‘La Sonnambula’
SHELBURNE FALLS — The Shelburne Falls Theater at Memorial Hall will stream a live performance of “La Sonnambula” from the Met Opera at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
“La Sonnambula” first premiered in Milan in 1831, and tells a tale of Amina, a young woman in the Swiss Alps who is preparing for her wedding to Elvino. All are excited until Amina, played by Nadine Sierra, sleepwalks into the bedroom of another nobleman, Count Rodolfo.

Meet the new Griswold Memorial Library director

COLRAIN — Residents are invited to meet the new director of Colrain’s Griswold Memorial Library, Val Finkel, on Friday, Oct 24, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Visitors can meet Finkel, share their thoughts and hopes for the future of the library, and enjoy snacks and light refreshments. The meet and greet will be held at the library, located at 12 Main Road.
Library program to teach how to maintain a sourdough starter
SHELBURNE — Residents can learn how Nicholas D’Alessandro of Hearthstone Artisan Bakery makes and maintains sourdough starters at the Shelburne Free Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.
D’Alessandro will explain what sourdough culture is, some different types of starters, the tools and process requirements for maintaining a healthy starter in a home kitchen, common errors and how to use sourdough in your favorite recipes.
