MONTAGUE — A man who was reportedly found lying unconscious on Turners Falls Road near its intersection with Hatchery Road on Tuesday afternoon was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment.

According to Montague K-9 Officer James Ruddock, who was directing traffic at a road closure barricade near the intersection of Turners Falls and Randall roads at approximately 4 p.m., the Montague Police Department received numerous calls reporting a man was lying unconscious in the road. He noted a bicycle was found at the scene.

The incident resulted in the closure of Turners Falls Road between Randall Road and Hatchery Road. Ruddock said the State Police Crime Scene Services Section was investigating. It is unclear whether the man may have been riding a bicycle and was struck by a vehicle, if he crashed a bicycle or if he was injured under some other circumstances.

Although the man was conscious by the time officers arrived, Ruddock said a medical helicopter was called due to the severity of his condition. However, at approximately 3 p.m., the helicopter, which was expected to land at Turners Falls Municipal Airport, was canceled due to weather conditions, according to Turners Falls Fire Capt. Luke Hartnett.

A Turners Falls ambulance instead drove the injured man to Baystate Medical Center.
