Make it four wins in a row for the Turners Falls girls volleyball team, as the Thunder picked up a four-set victory over Mahar. The Thunder are hitting their stride at the right time with the postseason looming, and a 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19 home win on Tuesday evening is another step in the right direction.
It was an all-around performance for Turners, with Maddie Dietz leading the way. Dietz recorded five aces, 11 assists, three digs, one kill and one block as she did a little bit of everything. Janelle Massey added four aces, a team-high nine kills and two digs of her own.
Ja’khia Williams made her presence felt at the net with five kills and four blocks, Shelby Beck chipped in four aces, one kill and three digs and Abby Moffatt’s stellar defense helped her accumulate 16 digs while tallying four aces. Maddie Haight (three assists, two kills, one ace, one dig) also played well in the win.
Madelynn Burgess put forth a strong effort for Mahar, as she had a match-high eight aces and dished out 11 assists to go along with four kills and four digs. Hayden Comeau put down a team-high eight kills while digging up a team-high seven balls, and both Angelina Alonso (five digs, three aces) and McKenzie Scribner (eight assists, two digs and one ace) contributed in defeat.
Turners Falls (8-4) next plays on Friday when they travel to Pioneer Valley Christian Academy at 5:15 p.m. Mahar (7-6) returns to action on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at home against Greenfield.
Boys soccer
Hoosac Valley 4, Franklin Tech 2 — Nate Gheorghita netted a pair of goals for the Eagles, but it wasn’t enough in a home loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday in Turners.
Both of Gheorghita’s tallies were unassisted.
Holyoke 5, Greenfield 3 — Jack Laurie and Grayson Thomas hooked up on a pair of goals in the second half, but the Green Wave couldn’t erase a 3-0 deficit on Tuesday in Holyoke.
Laurie first scored in the 45th minute on an assist from Thomas and added another in the 73rd minute with Thomas assisting again. Anthony Bergstrom also scored for Greenfield, with Laurie picking up the helper.
Liam Grahame-Lawson made 10 saves in the net.
Monson 11, Mahar 1 — The Mustangs hung 11 goals on the Sens on Tuesday.
Mahar dropped to 1-11 on the season and will next play on Friday at Smith Academy.
Four Rivers 7, Hartsbrook School 0 — A dominant performance from the Otters was highlighted by one goal apiece from Kolin Broderick, Marley McConkey, Jasper Greninger, Miles Retzlaff, Oscar McDonough, Aiden Heilig-Rury and Silas Kopera.
Four Rivers’ defense put forth a valiant effort to shut out Hartsbrook as well.
Girls soccer
Mahar 5, Pathfinder 0 — Addie Almeida and Maggie Ringer enjoyed two-goal days to pace the Senators in a decisive victory over Pathfinder on Tuesday.
Lexi Ares also scored and added an assist while Addie Winters dished out an assist for Mahar. Goalie Mackenzie Matthews made one save to earn the shutout.
Field hockey
Smith Academy 1, Franklin Tech 0 — The Falcons posted their fourth straight shutout in the win over the Eagles on Tuesday.
Sophia Jagodzinksi had the goal for Smith Academy. Goalie Chloe Avery made four saves for the Falcons, which bumped their record up to 11-1.
Franklin Tech falls to 6-7-1.
Longmeadow 4, Greenfield 1 — Madison Lemay buried a goal to tie the game up at one in the second quarter, but the Green Wave couldn’t muster any more scores as they fell to the powerhouse Lancers on Tuesday afternoon.
Henley Gilstrap assisted the Lemay tally.
West Springfield 2, Turners 0 — The Thunder couldn’t generate any offense in a shutout loss to the Terriers under the lights in West Springfield on Tuesday.
Turners (3-6-2) will have the rest of the week off before playing Palmer next week looking to avoid a fourth consecutive loss.
Golf
Franklin Tech 159, Pioneer 182, Mohawk Trail 190 — The Eagles cruised to a tri-match victory on Tuesday afternoon at Country Club of Greenfield behind a match-low, even-par 36 from Jack Day and a 39 from Grady Deery. Other Tech scorers included Ayron Hemingway and Braeden Talbot, both shooting a 42.
Tucker Aldrich earned the low Panthers score with a 41, followed by Parker Gerry (46), Noah Aldrich (47) and Liam Bassett (48).
Mohawk Trail was led by Conner Bergeron (46), Sam Mizula (47), Jacob Richardson (48) and Carl Jernstrom (49) in the loss.
McCann Tech 159, Athol 169 — The Bears played some solid golf at Forrest Park Country Club, but the host Hornets had three rounds of 40 or better led by Landon LeClair’s 37 to pick up the win.
Owen Stoddard shot a 39, Ethan Heuer posted a 40 and Dominik St. Andre carded a 41 in three impressive rounds. Rafael Lopez rounded out the scoring with a 49.

Franklin Tech 2, Athol 1 — The first half featured no scoring, but the second half was full of fireworks as the Eagles erased a 1-0 deficit to pick up a huge Tri-County League North victory on Monday night in Turners.
Faythe Sobieski netted the tying goal on a pass from Carly Walsh before Tech won it in the final 10 minutes on a score from Mady Lynde that ensued a scramble in front. Sobieski and Layla Hammond each contributed on the goal. Eagles goalie Shayly Martin made seven saves.
Athol’s lone tally came off the foot of Adalyn Proctor, an unassisted goal that put the Bears up 1-0 roughly 10 minutes into the second half. Athol goalies Ava Adams (seven) and Proctor (four) combined for 11 stops in their split time in goal.
Boys soccer
Frontier 3, Westfield 3 — After falling behind 1-0 in the 14th minute, the Redhawks ripped off three straight goals to storm ahead by two early in the second half. A pair of late Bombers goals in the final 10 minutes knotted things up at 3, which would be the game’s final score.
Diego Frazier scored twice and assisted a Max Millette goal as he had a strong offensive game for Frontier. Gus Radner also had an assist for the Hawks while Jack Cusson made four saves in the box.
Field hockey
Greenfield 8, Turners 0 — Under the lights at Vets, the Green Wave dominated the Thunder and scored eight goals on Monday night.
Henley Gilstrap, Madison Lemay, Grace Laurie and McKenzie Boswell all scored two goals apiece in the Greenfield win while Boswell (two), Gloria McDonald (two) and Bella LaFleur (one) dished out assists.
East Longmeadow 4, Frontier 3 — The Redhawks’ offense had no trouble scoring on the Spartans’ defense, but they couldn’t get enough stops on the other side of the field as they fell in a one-goal loss to East Longmeadow on Monday.
Addie Harrington, Brynna Fahey and Rowan Reilly scored for Frontier while Elsa Brown and Amelia Bouchard tallied assists. Brooke Charest stopped six shots in the cage.
Girls volleyball
Greenfield 3, Mohawk Trail 2 — The Green Wave won a five-set thriller on Monday evening, getting the best of the Warriors at home to snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 10-3 this season.
Mohawk Trail is now 3-10 on the year after the heartbreaking defeat.
