Grant applications due Oct. 16

CHARLEMONT — The Charlemont-Hawley Arts Council welcomes individuals or organizations to submit grant funding proposals for community-oriented arts, humanities and science programs in 2026.

The Arts Council has approximately $12,000 to distribute. According to council member Tinky Weisblat, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities, including exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies, performances in or out of schools, workshops, books and lectures. The Charlemont-Hawley Arts Council gives priority to events taking place in, or created by people living in, its two-town district.

The deadline for applications is Thursday, Oct. 16. Applications may be filled out online at massculturalcouncil.smartsimple.com.

Charlemont student named semifinalist in National Merit Scholarship Program

CHARLEMONT — Ivan Harder, a senior at The Academy at Charlemont, has been named a semifinalist in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Harder will move on in the competition and be considered among 16,000 other semifinalists for a chance to be named a National Merit Scholar and be awarded one of the scholarships that total $26 million.

Charlemont students Ainsley Murray, Lucas Tikkala-Cutler, Clara Petrovato and Fallon Paxton were named as commended scholars. These students will not continue in the
National Merit Scholarship Program, but were recognized for their academic excellence.

Historical Society program to share postcards

COLRAIN — Residents can see postcards depicting local scenes dating from around 1910 during a Colrain Historical Society program led by Debby Wheeler at the Stacy Barn on Main Road on Thursday, Oct. 9.

The program at 7:30 p.m. will follow the annual meeting and election of Historical Society officers at 7. The meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served
