I keep seeing the same line over and over: “So glad I moved! Not the same place anymore!”
And yet … those words usually come from the very people who never lifted a finger to preserve what they loved in the first place. They assumed Greenfield’s history would protect itself. They walked away and expected the city to stay frozen in time. And now, when they visit, they complain that it’s gone.
Meanwhile, new residents arrive with no nostalgia, no memory of what gave Greenfield its character. A rare few care to listen and learn, but most reshape the city into something that looks like where they came from … not where they are.
And here’s the sting: the ones who stayed, the ones digging up records, telling stories, preserving landmarks … they get brushed aside, ignored, or even disrespected by both sides. Yet they’re the only reason Greenfield has any thread of its history left.
Well, let’s be honest: if the ones who left won’t accept accountability, and most newcomers don’t care, then it’s left to a handful of people to carry Greenfield’s history forward.
So don’t be surprised that the town you remember is fading. Because without accountability and respect, there won’t be anything left to come home to.
Sincerely, someone who can’t help but remember.
