It’s a little odd to review a book that contains fewer words than the average book review, but I’m going to try. “Sea Dog Rescue” (Down East Books) doesn’t generally rely on words. It relies on pictures … and atmosphere.
Author and illustrator Astrid Sheckels of Greenfield created the book as a sequel to “Sea Dog,” her 2023 book about a dog named Walter. The descendant of a long line of sea-faring canines, Walter grew up exhibiting different skills and instead became a professional baker.
In that book, he learned that he was at home in the sea as well as in the kitchen, having maritime adventures and befriending a huge fish named Boris.
At the beginning of “Sea Dog Rescue,” Walter must once again temporarily abandon his cakes and breads when he learns that Boris is being blamed for sinking a local fishing boat. Frightened, the big fish has disappeared.
With the help of a merpup named Mira, Walter swims deep underwater and finds Boris hiding in the den of a sea dragon. The fish denies all wrong doing so Walter and Mira return to shore and start interviewing witnesses in an attempt to discover the truth.
(Mira adorably disguises herself as a regular dog by covering up her tail; apparently, merpups are a big secret in the world of the sea dogs.)
Of course, the two manage to clear Boris’s name, and baking ensues.
What stands out in this book is the glorious color. Sheckels creates a world, both on the shore and under the sea, that is awash with greens and greys. The texture of her paintings is so strong that the reader feels as though she can touch the characters and their environment.
The story, while slight, is appealing and teaches strong lessons. Walter and Mira are loyal friends to Boris. Their quest to prove his innocence involves careful listening and strong analytical skills.
The book’s publisher recommends it for children between the ages of 4 and 8. This slightly older child found it charming.
