I am a participant in a weekly standout in Sunderland for peace and human rights in Gaza and the West Bank.
A couple of people who see us out there every week recently asked me if there isn’t something we could do to have more impact (as if our small group should be able to stop what is going on thousands of miles away). I explain that we are reminding people here in our community that the genocide continues, that children and non-combatants are slaughtered and starved every day, that Zionist war crimes pile up with impunity. I tell them that we are there to let those who, like us, are deeply troubled by Israel’s insane cruelty, know they are not alone, not misguided. And I remind them that we are part of a global grassroots movement to support the Palestinian struggle in the face of corrupt global political leadership and to expose global elite support for the Zionist project as the deep-seated, rotten blight of colonialism and capitalism that it is.
