SOUTH HADLEY — At the half, it looked as if the Frontier Regional boys soccer team had everything under control. The Redhawks had peppered South Hadley goalie Noah Carillon throughout the entire first 40 minutes, and controlled much of the possession.
Matt Gillis had other plans.
The Tigers senior buried an unassisted goal in the second half to tie the game at one apiece, which would wind up as the final score as Frontier and South Hadley battled to a draw on Tuesday afternoon in South Hadley.
Henry Pleasant put the Redhawks on the board first, finding the back of the net on a sweet goal that got past Carillon about 10 minutes into the game.
In goal, Jack Cusson stopped six shots for Frontier, while Carillon made 10 saves for the Tigers.
South Hadley (2-4-2) is off the rest of the week and will play on the road against Springfield Central next Monday at 4 p.m.
Frontier (5-2-1) will have Wednesday off before traveling to Belchertown on Thursday for a 4 p.m. contest with the Orioles.
Pioneer 1, Athol 1 – The Bears and Panthers worked to a 1-1 draw in a Tri-County League North bout on Tuesday evening in Northfield.
Pioneer (0-6-1) is still in search of its first win while Athol is now 1-7-1 on the year.
SICS 8, Mahar 0 – The Sens failed to score a goal as the high-powered Bulldogs put up an eight spot on Tuesday afternoon in Springfield.
Clayde Thompson made five saves in goal for Mahar.
Girls soccer
Franklin Tech 4, Westfield Tech 1 – The Eagles earned a decisive win over Westfield Tech in an independent contest on Tuesday afternoon in Westfield.
Franklin Tech ended a streak of three straight games without a win as it now improves to 3-3-3 this fall.
Volleyball
Athol 3, Turners 2 – A five-set thriller between the Bears and Thunder went Athol’s way, as Tuesday’s match was about as close as it gets in the 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13 Bears victory.
Athol totaled 22 team kills with Evelyn Robinson’s seven and Giana Vaillancourt’s five leading the way, and the team accumulated 21 aces with eight different players recording at least one. Maddie Desrosiers tallied five of them.
Franklin Tech 3, Mahar 0 – Jenna Petrowicz recorded eight aces, 13 digs and five kills to help the Eagles’ sweep the Sens on Tuesday evening. Skylei LaPan had two aces and three digs, Sarah Beckwith had an all-around performance with six kills, five aces and two digs while McKenzie Stafford added two digs.
Set scores were 25-18, 26-24, 25-16.
Leading the charge for Mahar was Madelynn Burgess’ three-kill, eight-assist outing. Mia Santana had three kills and three digs, Hayden Comeau put down a team-high four kills and McKenzie Scribner recorded six digs in the Senators defeat.
Pioneer 3, Mohawk Trail 0 – The Panthers took care of business on Tuesday evening, sweeping the Warriors in straight sets to pick up their third win of the season.
Mohawk Trail was led by Jacobia Tyminski’s five kills, five aces and 13 digs. Sophia Wood played well also, adding six kills, five aces and 12 assists. Kiara Gruskowski chipped in three kills, two blocks and two aces.
Field hockey
Smith Academy 6, Mahar 0 – The 6-1 Falcons came to play on Tuesday, as their offense erupted early and often to blank the Sens in Hatfield.
Mahar (1-3-2) returns to action on Friday against Franklin Tech.
Golf
Franklin Tech 166, McCann Tech 167 – The Eagles pulled out a nailbiter on Tuesday afternoon at Forrest Park Country Club, as Jack Day’s round of 39 led all golfers to pace the team’s victory.
Grady Deery shot a 40, Braeden Talbot turned in a 41 and Ayron Hemingway carded a 46 in the Tech win.
Westfield Tech 159, Athol 165 – Owen Stoddard and Ethan Heuer were terrific on Tuesday afternoon at Ellinwood Country Club, as Stoddard fired a team-low 35 while Heuer turned in a 37.
That still wasn’t enough to defeat Westfield Tech, who was boosted by Dan O’Connor’s medalist round of 34. Other Athol scorers included Dominik St. Andre (40) and Rafeal Lopez (53).
Hampshire 196, Mohawk Trail 163 – Conner Bergeron earned the low round of the match with a 40 on Tuesday afternoon at Country Club of Greenfield.
Sam Mizula (49), Gus Foote (53) and Joel LaBelle (54) rounded out Mohawk Trail’s scorers in the losing effort.
Hopkins 158, Pioneer 196 – Tucker Aldrich, Weston Jones and Chayton Massa all broke 50 for the Panthers, but it wasn’t enough to hang with the Hawks on Tuesday afternoon at Westover Golf Course.
The Pioneer trio each shot a 48, while Mike Cyhowski carded a 52 in the losing effort.

Turners 3, Franklin Tech 1 – Yolvin Ovalle scored twice in the Thunder’s win over the Eagles on Monday night, with both goals coming off assists from Noah Kolodziej. Rojelio Galvez netted a goal of his own assisted by John Ramirez to round out Turners’ scoring.
Nate Gheorghita scored the lone Tech goal, an unassisted tally to put the Eagles on the board.
Girls soccer
Frontier 4, Amherst 2 – Contributions from five different players aided the Redhawks as they doubled up on the Hurricanes in a big win on Monday evening. Mara Allium led the way with two goals.
Calli Gifford and Skyler Steele scored one goal apiece, Addy Morrey dished out a pair of assists and Maddie Fagan recorded an assist as well. Goalie Jazzy Hayes stopped 10 Amherst shots in the box to earn the win.
SICS 1, Franklin Tech 0 – Shayly Martin made five saves in the Eagles loss on Monday.
Franklin Tech was unable to get on the board in a one-goal defeat.
Bulletin Board: CCG’s Tuesday morning women’s league holds season-ending scramble
Tuesday’s women’s closing scramble was won by Jane Smith, Gail Miller, Julie Bailey, Sally Bernard and Anne Corrinet, who combined to shoot a 5-under round of 67 to take first in the gross scoring. Teresa Varner, Michele Hazlett, Lane Kelly and Dianne Wood tied for second at 3-under with the team of Danica Hochstetler, Barb Killeen, Maggie Valentine, Anne Echeverria and Barb Morris as well as the team of Nancy Robie, Linda Lively, June Heideman, Susan Parker and Deb Vandale.
In the net scoring, Hochstetler, Killeen, Valentine, Echeverria and Morris tied for first with Robie, Lively, Heideman, Parker and Vandale at 5-under (67).
Frontier seniors run wild in win
The Frontier youth football senior team found an early lead thanks to a Carter Greene touchdown and never looked back en route to a dominant win over Warren-West Brookfield on Saturday. Greene ran tough all day long, and Connor Sheldon had a big run for a touchdown on top of some key defensive plays. Prestyn Petrizzi-Richmond added punt return and rushing TDs to wrap up the scoring for the RedHawks.
The defense was led by relentless efforts from Jordon Wentzel, Gavin Hale and Chase Bysiewski. Teague Washburn sealed the deal with an interception, and also had a great game at quarterback on Saturday.
