HADLEY — Wyatt Soriano scored the deciding goal for the Hopkins Academy boys soccer team in its 1-0 win against Greenfield on Monday.
Soriano’s 23rd minute strike set in motion an action-packed sequence late in the first half as the Green Wave earned a penalty-kick opportunity shortly after the Golden Hawks’ go-ahead goal.
Hopkins goalie Matt Feltovic made the stop to preserve the hosts’ lead, which wound up being enough as the Hawks earned its second win of the season.
“They grinded it out,” Hopkins head coach John Fillio said. “It’s always going to be a physical game with Greenfield and our league in general, so we just got to play smart, not let it get to us, keep our heads and continue playing the way we can.”
The Green Wave pressed hard during the second half searching for the equalizer as it floated multiple balls just outside the Hawks’ goalposts, but ultimately never found the back of the net.
“We talk all the time about, you got to do the whole 80 minutes,” Greenfield head coach Erich Leaper said. “I thought defensively, we did pretty well, just that one moment, we kind of lost concentration there. We moved the ball, plenty of shots, another little lapses of concentration. I feel like this [was] a pretty even one.”

Soriano had the best scoring chance during the second frame as the Hopkins sophomore nearly doubled its lead after corralling a loose ball inside the 6-yard box, but rang the shot off the post.
Later on, Greenfield nearly converted on a corner kick as the ball got through the box, but a Green Wave attacker missed wide of the far post with the kick.
Multiple yellow cards were handed out on each side as the intensity ramped up in the second stanza, however the Hawks did just enough to hold on and secure the victory.
“Control the ball, get it up the field, play possession passing,” Fillio said, referring to his message to the team at halftime. “We got to clean up our defense. We got sloppy in the first half. We had to clean it up with clearing the ball and we did that a little bit in the second half, but it was still a sloppy game. Greenfield is physical and fast up front so it’s something we got to get ready for next time we play them.”

The defeat dropped Greenfield to 2-4-1 overall.
“We’re a team that we can’t afford to lose little moments,” Leaper said. “We lose a little moment here or there and it starts to go away, but you just got to keep pushing with it. We’ve had rougher games where they drop a moment and then they don’t figure it out. We kept moving, we kept playing, we just got to avoid the little things here and there.”
The Hawks (2-4) will play host to Holyoke next, while the Green Wave’s next matchup will be against Chicopee Comp at home.
Both games are on Wednesday and kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
