The Franklin County Bulldogs senior football team improved to 3-1 on the season, as they rolled to a 32-13 win over Quabbin at Vets Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Casey Burke to Wes Darling. Xaviay Reynolds caught a 4-yard touchdown pass of his own from Burke. Burke then ran in a touchdown from two yards out to close out the first half with Franklin County ahead 20-6.

Bryce Zraunig started out the second half with a long 56-yard touchdown run, and Avery Lococo closed out the scoring with a 50-yard house call as well.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by Darling, who made six tackles and had a fumble recovery. Burke and Ryan Turner each had five tackles and Zraunig had two tackles, an interception and a sack on the day. Nate Coffin, Nate Ortiz and Reynolds tallied four tackles apiece. 

The Bulldogs (3-1) travel to Warren–West Brookfield next Sunday.

Bulldogs juniors drop tight one to Quabbin

The Franklin County Bulldogs junior football team lost 18-12 against Quabbin in an overtime thriller. Grabriel Ortiz and Ben Keeler each scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs, while the defense was led by Pheonyx Maynard and Damien McCarthy – making six tackles apiece.

Orion Ortiz had an interception and Josh James had a fumble recovery for Franklin County.

Redhawks secure dominant juniors win

The Frontier football juniors won its home opener on Saturday vs Warren–West Brookfield with a 34-0 shutout. Frontier scores came from Kyrie Petrzzi-Richmond, Johnny Stanisewski, Barrett Kicza and Lennon Pheasant.

Much of that success came from the line, where Bryce Lewis and Henry Baker set the tone in a physical battle up front in the trenches. Defensively Jack Carney, Lane Kicza and Phin Friz led the charge early with key stops that kept Warren–West Brookfield from gaining momentum. In the second half, Matthew and Ben Griffin made their mark.    

Carson Clark steadied the offense and ran hard securing the victory.

Greenfield touch league Week 3

Sirum 12, J&J Athletics 6 (OT) – Sirum quarterback Parker Hickey scampered in from the 11-yard line for a TD early on, and found Nuny Vega for a score in OT to seal the win. Hickey added the game-winning interception in overtime following the toss to Vega. The Sirum defense had four sacks and three interceptions, led by Chucky St. Hillaire and Jaden Whiting Martinez.

J&J quarterback Mack Rodgers led a fourth-quarter comeback, finding Cedric Gonnett from 18 yards out. Erik Pardee added three sacks for the J&J defense.

Gill CC Woodworking 14, Dope Boys 6 – Pat Viencek tossed touchdown passes to Jalen Sanders and Adam Bastarache, and Malachi Roman added two extra points to help Gill improve to 3-0. Roman, Sanders and Alex Bourrasa also had one interception each.

Dope Boys quarterback Marquis Goon found Josh Dixon from 12 yards out for the team’s lone TD. Pedro Colon and Jorge Santos had strong games in the losing effort.

Panthers 20, Rockets 12 – The Panthers are finally in the win column, as Jared Hart used scoring passes to CJ Daignault and Chris Focus to earn win No. 1. Daignault added an extra point, and Dan Jenkins returned an interception 23 yards for a TD on defense.

Rockets QB Lew Borden found Tyler Charbeneau for a TD, and Mike Menard returned an interception 31 yards for a score to lead the Rockets.

Tar Heels 18, Blitzing Bears 6 – League rookie QB Curtis Dowers hit Andre Lester for two TDs before finding his brother, Caleb Dowers, for a score to move the Tar Heels to 3-0.

Erving Rivera ran for a bunch of yards, and hit Kasheef Sheppard for a 13-yards touchdown in the Bears’ loss. Jordan Miller and Damain Vennel had strong games as well.

CCG

The 34th annual Barber Collins tournament took place at the Country Club of Greenfield over the weekend, and Andy Lesenski and Justin McCloud blitzed the Barber Flight (gross) field throughout the two-day event. The pair shot 18-under par (two rounds of 63) to win by a whopping 12 shots. Eric Adams and Mike Archer as well as David Lapierre and Dan Lapierre tied for second with a total score of 138 (6-under).

In the Collins Flight (gross), Douglas Farrick and Arno Skiski took first place with a score of 1-under while Ike Purington and Patrick Varner finished second (1-over) and Ryan Collins and Mike Collins shot 5-over to take third.

For net scoring, KC Finley and Owen Finley totaled a 133 for first place in the Barber Flight, while Thomas Hutchings and Alex Kielb shot a 128 to grab first in the Collins Flight.

Don Maynard Memorial 5k

After 30 years of the race being five miles, the 31st Annual Don Maynard Memorial was changed to a 5k this year.

Local winners are as follows: Silvie Schneider (22:53) overall female, Mark Rabasco (17:35) overall male, Samantha Suhl (32:47) 19-and-under female, Becky Stone (28:34) 40-49 female, Joan Lapierre (26:41) 75-79 female, Grant Gonzalez (19:16) 40-49 male, Alex Loud (24:42) 50-59 male, James Farrick (32:04) 60-64 male, Dan Gannon (30:08) 65-69 male, Mike Duffy (28:56) 70-74 male, Thomas White (32:30) 75-79 male, Bob Welsh (31:48) 80-84 male.

Greenfield Tennis Association

Over the weekend, the Greenfield Tennis Association (GTA) held their second annual mixed doubles tournament at Beacon Field. First place was Ashley Schaffer and Pat Roche, second place was Rachel Epstein and Chris Ferriter while third place went to Jenna Silk and Sehoon Ahn. Finishing in fourth place was Mary Monohon and Gabe Seaver.

On Monday afternoon at the Highland Park Clay Courts, the GTA Doubles League capped off the season with the top-seeded team of Jared Berthiaume and Sam Thomson defeating the sixth-seeded team of Chris Ferritier and Guy Ardrey, 6-3, 6-2.

The GTA is holding its final tournament of the 2025 season on Sept. 26-28 at Highland Park Clay Courts. On Sept. 26, matches will start at 4:30. On the 27th and 28th, they will begin at 10 a.m. It’s a doubles tournament with teams consisting of men, women, mixed and junior and the event is free to all. Signups must be completed by 5 p.m. on Sept. 25.

Junior field hockey

On Saturday, the Greenfield youth field hockey team knocked off Westfield in a 1-0 shutout victory. Savannah Thomas scored the lone Greenfield goal unassisted. Isabella Reyes and Tayanna N’Dissi both played well in the win, while goalie Hailey Sadler earned the shutout by making six saves.
