Barbecue to raise money for North Quabbin Dog Park
ATHOL — A chicken barbecue and cornhole tournament will be held at the 25 Sportsmans Club on Thrower Road on Saturday, Sept. 20, to benefit the North Quabbin Dog Park in Orange.
The event is scheduled to start at noon and there will be a cornhole tournament for teams of two, with an entry fee of $40 per team. There are limited meal tickets ($15 apiece) and 180 raffle tickets ($20 apiece) available.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Fisher Hill Elementary School’s outdoor classroom, solar array
ORANGE — The community is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new outdoor classroom and solar array at Fisher Hill Elementary School. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 4:30 p.m.
Light refreshments will be served and the Orange Energy Committee will have information about how the array will save the town money on the school’s energy costs.

Business owner donates $2K to soldiers’ memorial
ORANGE — Norman Sargent, who owns Graverobbers Restoration at 8 West Main St., has made a $2,000 donation to the Trustees of Soldiers’ Memorial.
He told the Selectboard he holds car shows and other get-togethers to celebrate being in business and he intertwines those events with a chance to raise money for the trustees. He donated the money with the stipulation that it be designated solely for the trustees.
“This year we raised much more money than we thought we were going to, which I’m happy to say,” Sargent said.
Impact Nano executive appointed to EDIC
ORANGE — The Selectboard voted unanimously on Wednesday to appoint Mark Wilkinson to the Orange Economic Development & Industrial Corporation. His term will expire on July 1, 2028.
Wilkinson is the chief operating officer of Impact Nano, which primarily produces advanced materials for microelectronics.
Selectboard accepts resignation, retirement
ORANGE — The Selectboard on Wednesday announced Dee Wheeler’s resignation from the Orange Cultural Council and Sarah Custer’s retirement as a veterans agent at the North Quabbin Veterans’ Services.
Custer’s final day will reportedly be Nov. 25. Selectboard Chair Tom Smith said Custer has promised to work to ensure a smooth transition with her successor.
The Selectboard also voted unanimously to appoint Tracy Murphy, of Petersham, to the Commission on Disability. Her term will expire on March 1, 2028.
Friends of the Orange Public Libraries holding book sale
ORANGE — The Friends of the Orange Public Libraries will hold a book sale at Wheeler Memorial Library on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds go to the Friends.
Myrtle Street Klezmer coming to 1794 Meetinghouse
NEW SALEM — The 1794 Meetinghouse’s final concert of the season will feature Myrtle Street Klezmer at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Myrtle Street Klezmer specializes in klezmer music — the traditional celebratory music of the Ashkenazi Jews, or Jewish people with roots in Eastern and Central Europe. The six-member band’s music draws on Balkan, Greek, Arabic, rock and jazz, in addition to favorites from the classic and contemporary Klezmer repertoire. They work in the tradition of the old-world klezmer musicians, singing in Yiddish, Hebrew and Ladino.
Tickets, available at tinyurl.com/KlezmerTix, cost $20 for adults and $10 for anyone 13 to 17 years old. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted for free.
Swift River School Run Club seeks volunteers
NEW SALEM — The Swift River School Run Club, formerly known as the 100 Mile Club, is looking for volunteers.
Each week, club members track the miles they run or walk, working toward personal and community milestones. Joining the club is free, or for $10, participants can also get a club T-shirt. Participants receive a short weekly email with a link to log their miles and see the total miles the school and community have achieved together.
