Canal Street road closure starts Monday
TURNERS FALLS — Canal Street will be closed starting Monday, Sept. 15, as FirstLight Hydro Generating Co. begins removing the former Strathmore mill complex pedestrian footbridge over the power canal.
Second Street will be open for two-way traffic, but on-street parking is banned during this closure, which is expected to last through Friday, Sept. 26, according to the Montague town website.
Additionally, the Fifth Street Bridge will be closed by the state Department of Transportation starting Sunday, Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. and will reopen on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m. The detour directs motorists to take Route 2A (French King Highway) to the Turners Falls-Gill Bridge to enter the village during the closure. This bridge closure corresponds with the planned drawdown of the power canal by FirstLight for annual dam repairs, which are scheduled during the same time period.
