On the road in Athol, the Franklin Tech girls soccer team notched its first shutout of the season to snag an impressive victory.

Kaelyn Mclean tallied the only goal of the game late in the first half, and the Eagles held serve from there en route to a 1-0 Bi-County League victory under the lights at O’Brien Field.

“Athol played really hard, and lot of the game was played between the 18 [yard boxes],” Franklin Tech coach Jason Butynski said. “I was happy with the way the team played defensively tonight. I think it was a continued step in the right direction.”

Indy Wiles assisted on Mclean’s goal, and Shayly Martin stopped all six shots she faced for the shutout.

Athol’s Ava Adams made six saves in an impressive outing between the pipes for the hosts.

Pioneer 4, Smith Academy 0 – Dzelila Cecunjanin’s hat trick catapulted the Panthers to the shutout victory.

Cecunjanin broke the scoreless drought with three minutes to go in the first half, following a cross from Maddie Keefe, then Pioneer poured three more in the second frame to pick up its second win of the season.

Jaelyn Boliski (goal) and Deveney Pillsbury (two assists) also factored into the Panthers’ win.

“The girls played with an incredible spirit tonight, supporting themselves and one another with their best performance of the season,” Pioneer head coach Matt Killeen said.

Chicopee 5, Greenfield 4 — The Green Wave lost a barn-burner to the Pacers at home.

Chicopee’s Cassidy Pytel potted four goals for the victors as Greenfield sank to 1-2.

Granby 1, Frontier 0 — The Rams handed the Redhawks their first loss of the season in Friday’s low-scoring affair in South Deerfield.

Marcela Tapia scored for Granby (3-0-1) which served as the only blemish of Frontier (2-1) goalie Jazzy Hayes’ (12 saves) performance.

Boys soccer

Frontier 1, Westfield 0 — The Redhawks needed one goal in its Holley Division victory.

Frontier moves to 3-1 overall after the win.

Turners Falls 1, Monson 1 – Yolvin Ovalle netted the Thunder’s only goal in its first draw of the season.

Turners Falls won its first three games by a combined score of 14-1.

Volleyball

Athol 3, Hampden Charter 1 – Make it two wins in its last three matches for the Bears.

Athol took the first set 25-11, but a 24-26 second set loss evened the match score. The Bears then flipped the script in the third set with a 26-24 win, before claiming the fourth and deciding set, 25-22.

Giana Vaillancourt’s nine kills and nine assists spearheaded Athol’s victory.

Minnechaug 3, Frontier 0 – Following two straight five-set victories earlier in the week, the Redhawks were shut out at Goodnow Gym.

Set scores came out to 20-25, 16-25 and 20-25.

Caitlin Maio was involved for Frontier, claiming 10 kills and 11 digs.

The Redhawks’ record fell below .500 in the defeat at 2-3.

Minuteman 3, Pioneer 0 – Strong matches from Greta Lewis and Jacobia Tyminski couldn’t lead the Panthers past the Minutewomen.

Lewis concluded with two kills, 17 digs, two aces and a block while Tyminski tabbed three kills and 21 digs for Pioneer. Kiara Gruskowski and Corrie Glenn each grabbed 23 digs as well.

Lana Gagnon played well for the Panthers (2-2) too with three kills, 13 digs and an ace.

Field hockey

Longmeadow 2, Greenfield 1 — The Green Wave impressed in their second game in as many days, falling just short in a 2-1 decision to powerhouse Longmeadow on Friday in Greenfield.

“A lot of stuff came together today,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “We did a lot of the little things which led to the bigger things for us. I was very, very excited about what I saw.”

Grace Laurie staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead in the first quarter, tallying on a penalty corner with an assist from Gloria McDonald.

Longmeadow tied it in the second quarter thanks to Kordelia Michalik, and Michalik netted the eventual game winner in the third quarter to help the Lancers rally for the Suburban League victory.

Longmeadow held a 21-5 edge in penalty corners and a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. Wave keeper Kayden Viencek made 10 saves between the pipes.

Franklin Tech 4, Hampshire 1 — The Eagles earned their third win in a row with a pair of points each from Amelia Rider and Izzy Allen.

Rider recorded two goals while Allen added two assists as Franklin Tech moved to 3-1 overall.

Elka Pruzynski potted the Raiders’ (2-3) only goal.

West Springfield 4, Mahar 1 – Twelve saves from Senators goalie Bella Burnet wasn’t enough in the defeat.

Taylor Paluk nabbed Mahar’s goal on an assist from Katie McGinnis.

The Senators now sit at 1-1-1 overall.

Golf

Frontier 156, Turners 197 – Frontier’s Brady Wood carded a one-under 34 to lead the Redhawks to win No. 5 on the season.

Wood birdied the fourth and fifth holes at Cherry Hill Golf Course, highlighting his round.

Jacob Cornelison (36), Christian Powell (42) and Jamie McCarthy (44) also contributed to Frontier’s (5-4) final score.

Cam Cogswell shot 44 to pace Turners (1-6) in the defeat.

Franklin County Tech 155, Westfield Voc 187 – Medalist honors from Jack Day extended the Eagles’ winning streak to five matches after the win at Thomas Memorial.

Day’s even-par round of 35 was the low round of the match. Teammates Grady Deery, Braeden Talbot and Mason Vassar all shot 40 to round out Franklin’s (5-0) top four scorers.
