After dropping a third set that extended the match, the Mahar girls volleyball team slammed the door in the fourth set, finishing strong to win the battle for the North Quabbin Region against rival Athol via a 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 25-8 victory on Thursday at Mallet Gymnasium in Athol.

Mahar’s Madelynn Burgess racked up 10 aces and eight assists in the win, while Hayden Comeau put down a match-high eight kills to go with seven aces. Mia Santana added four aces and four digs for the Senators (3-1).

Athol’s Giana Vaillancourt paced the hosts with seven aces and three digs. Evelyn Robinson had five aces and a kill while Morgan Brailey tossed in four aces for the Bears (1-4).

Turners Falls 3, Mohawk Trail 1 – Janelle Massey helped key a hot-serving Thunder attack on Thursday, as she racked up 11 aces to go with six kills and four digs in Turners’ four-set victory.

Set scores were 25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 25-19.

Maddie Haight had a strong night for Turners with eight aces, nine assists and two kills. Abby Moffatt added six aces and eight digs in the win.

Greenfield 3, Franklin Tech 0 – The Green Wave won their third match in a row on Thursday, sweep the Eagles at Nichols Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-20.

Franklin Tech was paced by Jenna Petrowicz (two aces, two kills, two digs), Emma Petersen (ace, two kills, three digs) and Laura Fuess (two kills).

Golf

Frontier 166, Amherst 195 — Brady Wood posted the low round of the day, as his 38 at Amherst Golf Club propelled the Redhawks to a decisive victory on Thursday.

Jacob Cornelison (40), Addy Wood (44) and Christian Powell (44) were the other scorers for Frontier.

Turners Falls 179, Mohawk Trail 195 — The Thunder had all four scoring players break 50, using a balanced effort to take down Mohawk Trail for their first win of the season on Thursday.

Ethan Eichorn and Cam Cogswell both shot 43s to power Turners Falls, while Liam Kerivan (46) and William Tyler (47) also contributed toward the win.

Mohawk Trail’s Conner Bergeron was the overall medalist with a 42, followed by Gus Foote (48), Sam Mizula (50) and Joei Labelle (55).

Field hockey

Frontier 4, East Longmeadow 2 — The Spartans had outscored their first three opponents by a 16-0 margin before Thursday’s game in South Deerfield.

Frontier put a halt to that early-season momentum.

The Redhawks had four different goal scorers and Brooke Charest made five saves in net to power the hosts to an impressive 4-2 victory.

Frontier (1-1-1), which won its first game of the season while handing East Longmeadow its first defeat, received goals from Elsa Brown, Ashlie Galenski, Macy DeMaio and Addie Harrington. Brown assisted on two of the four goals, as did Haly Doucette-Kaplan.

Boys soccer

Greenfield 8, Athol 2 – Jack Laurie scored four goals for the second time this season, and the Green Wave scored five goals in a 14-minute span in the second half to pull away for a lopsided victory.

Lucian Volosenco scored twice for Greenfield, which also received tallies from Grayson Thomas (four assists) and Isaac Tripp. Laurie dished out a pair of assists, and goalie Liam Grahame-Lawson made 10 saves for the Wave.

Karim Thompson scored both goals for Athol, while Drake Wing added an assist and made 14 saves in net.

Franklin Tech 2, Hopkins 1 – The Eagles rallied in the second half, turning a 1-0 deficit into a thrilling victory when Nate Gheorghita scored the game-winning goal with just 28 seconds remaining on Thursday in Hadley.

Jon Gheorghita found his brother with a well-placed through ball, and Nate buried the winner to help the Eagles improve to a perfect 3-0 on the young season.

“We found out a lot about ourselves today,” Tech coach Dan Prasol said. “Down 1-0 and being able to dig deep and come back, that’s all we can ask for.”

Cody Yetter set up the tying goal with about 11 minute remaining in the second half. His shot was deflected away by the Hopkins goalie, but Nate Gheorghita was there to put in the rebound and pull the visitors level.

Four Rivers 9, Charlemont Academy 0 – It was a balanced scoring effort from the Otters on Thursday, as Kolin Broderick, Aksel Kotright-Clark and Miles Retzlaff all tallied twice in the victory.

Owen Baril, Silas Kopera and Oscar McDonough also found the back of the net for Four Rivers.

Turners Falls 6, Pioneer 0 – The Thunder continued their hot start to the season, scoring six goals for the second game in a row en route to the victory over the Panthers under the light in Turners Falls on Thursday.

Rojelio Galvez tallied twice in the win, while Yolvin Ovalle, Kainen Stevens, John Ramirez and Freilyn Jose Abarua Corona also scored for Turners Falls (3-0).
