Despite dominating the entirety of Tuesday’s County League field hockey contest, Franklin Tech was staring a scoreless draw in the face with the clock ticking away against Palmer.
But with four minutes remaining in regulation, the Eagles finally broke through. Teagan Donahue netted the game-winning goal with an assist from Cammy Jacques, and Tech snagged its first win of 2025 thanks to a 1-0 shutout of the Panthers in Turners Falls.
“We dominated the entire game, we just couldn’t find a goal until the very end,” Franklin Tech coach Rian Lovett said.
The Eagles (1-1) held a 14-0 edge in shots on goal and a 14-0 edge in penalty corners, but needed almost 60 full minutes to break through.
“We’re young so it’s going to take some time but we’re going to figure it out,” Lovett added.





Mohawk Trail 2, Mahar 2 – Jayda Waters scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals to help visiting Mohawk Trail rally for a tie on Tuesday in Orange.
Mahar led 1-0 into the fourth quarter. Kathryn McGinnis and Taylor Paluk netted goals for the Senators (1-0-1), and each assisted on the other’s goal. Bella Burnett made 11 saves in the Mahar net.
Mohawk Trail goalie Brynlee Purrington stopped four shots, and Libby Amstein notched an assist on one of Waters’ markers.
Hampshire 2, Turners 1 – Anna McCarthy scored the lone goal for the Thunder, which dropped their first game of the season in a 2-1 County League contest on Tuesday in Turners Falls.
Ella Larouche assisted on McCarthy’s goal, while keeper Connor Glennon recorded nine saves for Turners (2-1).
Boys soccer
Gardner 9, Athol 0 – Drake Wing made 11 saves for the Bears, and Jason Gerard added four more stops as the Athol goalies were busy in Tuesday’s loss.
Gardner led 5-0 at halftime.
Chicopee 2, Frontier 1 – Ian Paciorek scored a late goal for the Redhawks, but the Pacers held on for a 2-1 victory Tuesday night.
Max Millette assisted Paciorek’s 73rd-minute strike. Goalie Jack Cusson made seven saves for Frontier (2-1), which played its third consecutive one-goal game to open the season.
Four Rivers 8, Hartsbrook 0 — A five-pack of goals from Kolin Broderick powered the Otters to a dominant victory on Tuesday.
Cooper Whitney, Jasper Greninger and Miles Retzlaff also tallied in the win for Four Rivers.
Girls soccer
Franklin Tech 2, Smith Academy 2 – Trailing 2-1 in the second half, freshman Faythe Sobieski netted the equalizer off a corner kick to help the Eagles to a 2-2 Bi-County League draw Tuesday night in Turners Falls.
Lindsey Taylor staked Franklin Tech (0-1-2) to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Sobieski played a perfect through ball to a streaking Taylor, and she finished calmly through a charging goalie.
Smith’s Anna Scagel tallied a beautiful goal off a deep free kick just before halftime to tie the game, and Scagel notched her second of the night in the second half to make it 2-1.
That set the stage for Sobieski, who beat the goalkeeper near post with a corner kick.
“I was proud of the way my team responded,” Tech coach Jason Butynski said.
Goalie Shayly Martin made seven saves in net for the Eagles.
Greenfield 3, Holyoke 2 – Elderina Cecunjanin found the back of the net twice, and the Green Wave went on the road and picked up an impressive 3-2 victory over the Purple Knights on Tuesday in Holyoke.
Tayler Bergeron was the other goal scorer for Greenfield (1-1), which picked up its first win of the season in the process. Cecunjanin and Bergeron each had an assist, and Valerie Bzomowski made 12 saves in the Wave goal.
St. Mary’s 4, Pioneer 1 – Deveney Pillsbury tallied for the Panthers, which dropped a second game in as many days with Tuesday’s loss to the Saints.
Dzelila Cecunjanin assisted on Pillsbury’s goal, but Pioneer was unable to crack St. Mary’s goalie Audrey Amal beyond that.
“Pioneer dominated possession and shots, but were unable to break through or defend the counterattack effectively,” Panthers coach Matt Killeen said.
Volleyball
Pioneer 3, Franklin Tech 1 – After struggling to find a win in 2024, the Panthers are finding their groove early in 2025.
Pioneer won its second match in three tries to start the season, holding serve at home for a 25-23, 28-26, 17-25, 25-19 victory over the Eagles at Messer Gymnasium in Northfield on Tuesday.
Sophia Wood dished out 12 assists to go with seven aces and two blocks for Pioneer (2-1), while Jacobia Tyminski went for six aces, eight digs and three kills. Abbie Ray’s big offensive night featured seven kills and three blocks, while Lana Gagnon (two kills, two aces, four digs) and Greta Lewis (five aces, four digs, two kills) also had strong nights for the Panthers.
Tech’s Madison Pettengill (nine kills, four blocks, seven digs), Taylor Underwood (seven digs, two aces), Laura Fuess (three kills, two digs), Sarah Beckwith (11 aces, eight kills, six digs) paced the visitors.
Greenfield 3, Turners 2 – The Green Wave won a marathon five-setter in the Powertown on Tuesday night, edging their rivals for the first time in 12 years.
The Green Wave (2-0) last defeated Turners Falls on Oct. 3, 2013 – a 3-1 victory at Nichols Gymnasium.
“The girls had some ups and downs, but they worked together as a team and pushed through for the win,” Greenfield coach Amy Youmell said. “I’m so proud of the effort and hard work they’ve been putting in. Excited to see how Greenfield volleyball keeps growing.”
Amy Mihailicenco led the offense with 13 kills and nine aces, while Bianca Reynolds (two kills, two aces) and Karinna Kostov (five aces, two kills) also had impressive outings.
Janelle Massey paced the Thunder with five kills, four aces and four digs. Shelby Beck went for five aces and five digs, while Maddie Dietz tossed in an ace and seven digs.
Golf
Franklin Tech 164, Pioneer 180 – Jack Day shot 37 to power the Eagles to another victory on Monday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls
Braeden Talbot followed with a 38 to aid Franklin Tech (3-0).
Pioneer’s Weston Jones (43) and Carter Gerry (44) paced the visitors.
Smith Voc 179, Mohawk Trail 194 – Conner Bergeron was the match medalist for the Warriors, firing a round of 40 at the Country Club of Greenfield on Tuesday.
Sam Mizula shot 47 to aid Mohawk Trail, while other contributors were Jacob Richardson (53), Joei Labelle (54) and Gus Foote (54).
McCann Tech 168, Turners Falls 202 – Liam Kerivan shot 45 to post the low round of the day for the Thunder on Tuesday.
