Musical ensemble Lyracle to perform Saturday
DEERFIELD — Historic Deerfield will kick off its fall events lineup with “Musick’s Recreation” on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Deerfield Community Center at 16 Memorial St.
Musical ensemble Lyracle will perform songs by composer Henry Purcell and others from the late 1600s. Mezzo-soprano Ashley Mulcahy will sing while the other half of the duo, James Perretta, strums the viol.
According to Lyracle’s website, the ensemble aims to “develop and perform concert programs that engage with history through music, tell the stories of people who partook in music for voice and viol, and illuminate our shared humanity.”
Tickets are $25 for adult non-members, $15 for Historic Deerfield members and $10 for children ages 5 to 17.
First Committee Fair planned for Sunday
DEERFIELD — As part of Engage: Deerfield’s Community Conversation program, the group will host its first Committee Fair on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Town Hall.
Visitors can enjoy cookies from Bittersweet Bakery and chat with members of the Planning Board, Capital Improvements Committee, Cultural Council and library trustees. According to the group’s President Pat Ryan, the fair will “offer a chance for residents to meet people involved in shaping Deerfield’s future and hear what they are working on.”
Admission for the fair is free, but Ryan said donations to support the series are appreciated.
Sept. 30: Flu shots available
DEERFIELD — Seniors ages 65 and up can get their flu shots at the South Deerfield Fire Station, 84 Greenfield Road, on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Advance registration through Color.com is recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome.
Ed the Wizard coming to S. White Dickinson Memorial Library
WHATELY — Ed the Wizard is coming to S. White Dickinson Memorial Library on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. for children to see and participate in his “Alchemy Laboratory.”
According to Ed the Wizard’s website, he will perform “transfigurations and other feats of magic with everyday items found at home” and the help of Bernoulli’s principle, electromagnetism and optical effects. Science lessons for kids will power the performance.
Book sale set for Sept. 28
WHATELY — The S. White Dickinson Memorial Library will host a book sale on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Conway has new assistant treasurer/tax collector
CONWAY — Northfield resident Jolene Lavallee is the town’s new assistant treasurer and tax collector, working 18 hours per week.
Lavallee, 43, said she has worked in accounting and financing for about 15 years.
“You look exceptionally qualified for this role,” Selectboard Chair Erica Goleman said before the Selectboard approved her hiring during its Aug. 25 meeting.
Lavallee said math drew her to this career path.
“I like numbers,” she said. “They just make sense to me.”
She said her first week on the job went smoothly, adding, “I’m excited to be here.”
Conway seeks grant to repair embankments
CONWAY — The Selectboard approved a grant application on Aug. 25 through the Rural and Tribal Assistance Pilot Program.
The $348,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation is designed “to help advance infrastructure projects in rural and tribal communities,” reads the program’s website.
If the grant is awarded to Conway, the funds would be used to repair embankments at 3 Shelburne Falls Road. Town Administrator Veronique Blanchard said she plans to research nature-based solutions for the embankments.
Conway seeks funding to replace streetlights
CONWAY — The Selectboard settled on a plan to apply for a Green Communities grant in the fall. If the town receives the grant from the state’s Green Communities Division, the money would be used to replace streetlights on Fields Hill Road and Cricket Hill Road.
According to Mass.gov, “The Green Communities Division strives to help all 351 Massachusetts cities and towns find clean energy solutions that reduce long-term energy costs and strengthen local economies.”
