Candidate meet and greet set for Saturday

GREENFIELD — The League of Women Voters of Franklin County and the Greenfield Public Library are co-sponsoring a candidate meet and greet in advance of next week’s preliminary election in Greenfield.

The meet and greet will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library’s Community Meeting Room. Residents are encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the credentials and platforms of the candidates.

Refreshments will be provided.

Next First Sunday Word set for Sept. 7

GREENFIELD — The First Sunday Word, a long-running literary event hosted by Paul Richmond of Human Error Publishing, will be held at The LAVA Center at 324 Main St. on Sept. 7.

Doors open at 1 p.m., open mic starts at 1:30 and featured speakers start at 2:30. Sliding-scale admission is $1 to $5. Books will be for sale.

Library to mark International Crochet Day

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Public Library will celebrate International Crochet Day on Friday, Sept. 12, with two events: a Crochet-In and a crochet class with Diane Levine.

Residents can bring a project and a lawn chair to join other crocheters on the front patio for the library’s day-long Crochet-In, weather permitting. Alternatively, visitors can also find a place to crochet inside the library.

In addition to crocheting anywhere inside or outside the library, attendees can learn to crochet a miniature octopus in Levine’s class from 2 to 4 p.m. Yarn, hooks and all other materials will be provided, and attendees can take their completed creation home. Space is limited to eight participants and basic crochet skills are required. Registration is available at greenfieldpl.libcal.com/event/14824904.

This program is free and intended for ages 12 and up.

Dien Vo, Flonia Telegrafi to be featured at next Local Film Night

GREENFIELD — The LAVA Center’s next Local Film Night on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. will feature Dien Vo and Flonia Telegrafi. The two local filmmakers will screen and discuss their work.

Vo is a filmmaker and visiting assistant professor in film production at Mount Holyoke College. He previously taught and developed film programs at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), Virginia Tech and Bard College at Simon’s Rock. He works as a director, writer, producer and editor.

Telegrafi is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator whose creative work explores themes of memory, community, belonging and our relationship to nature through filmmaking, audio and web-based storytelling, oral history and community journalism. She is a visiting assistant professor of non-fiction filmmaking at Mount Holyoke College, and previously taught at the City University of New York, Marymount Manhattan College and the Rikers Island Media Lab, a program of the Tribeca Film Institute.

A $1 to $5 donation is suggested.

Sept. 17: Pocket Constitutions available

GREENFIELD — Residents are encouraged to stop by the Greenfield Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 17, to pick up a free Pocket Constitution, offered in observance of Constitution Day.

Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the U.S. Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on Sept. 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.

Registration is not required, but supplies are limited. One copy per person will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
